This week on Dezeen<\/a> we asked industry experts, including Reinier de Graaf<\/a>, Tola Ojuolape<\/a> and Luca Nichetto<\/a>, about what trends we should look out for in architecture<\/a>, interiors<\/a> and design<\/a> this year.<\/p>\n When it comes to architecture, our architecture reporter Amy Peacock found that architects “must rethink how and why we build”<\/a> in 2026.<\/p>\n Dezeen editorial director Max Fraser spoke to designers for our design trend outlook, and came to the conclusion that design “could see a long overdue shift”<\/a> this year.<\/p>\n Interior design, meanwhile, will opt for “curated calm over superficial opulence”<\/a>, designers told design and interiors reporter Jane Englefield.<\/p>\n Continuing our exploration of what’s to come in 2026, we rounded up 15 buildings to look out for in 2026<\/a>, including architecture studio Sn\u00f8hetta’s design of the Shanghai Grand Opera House (pictured).<\/p>\n New York and Texas skyscrapers, the Buffalo Bills stadium and the Obama Presidential Center made our list of eight high-profile American architecture projects completing in 2026<\/a>.<\/p>\n The annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) took place in Las Vegas this week, with brands and designers showing technology products including an ultrasonic knife<\/a>, a colour-shifting lamp by Sabine Marcelis for IKEA<\/a> and “responsive” Lego Smart Bricks<\/a>.<\/p>\n These and many other intriguing products, such as a pocket-sized pet and a “paper battery”, featured in our roundup of 10 gadgets that caught our attention at CES<\/a>.<\/p>\n In the US, architect Shalom Baranes unveiled an updated design for the White House ballroom<\/a> and suggested adding a storey to the West Wing for symmetry.<\/p>\n “This scheme does require a two-story colonnade, connecting the East Room in the White House to the new ballroom,” said Baranes.<\/p>\n Also in the US, Trump aide Will Scharf reportedly wants the planned stadium by architecture studio HKS for the NFL team Washington Commanders to have a “classical” design<\/a>.<\/p>\n Buildings demolished during the 21st century in European cities had a shorter lifespan than those in US cities<\/a>, according to a new report.<\/p>\n The report compared the ages of around 15,000 buildings and found that the average mean age of a demolished building in the US cities was 81, while for the European cities it was 65.<\/p>\n Popular projects this week included a home on a Japanese island with an oversized metal roof<\/a>, a brick pavilion in southeast London<\/a> and a “serene” Mexico City townhouse<\/a>.<\/p>\n Our lookbook this week featured kitchens filled with warm natural wood<\/a>.<\/p>\n This week on Dezeen<\/p>\n This week on Dezeen is our regular roundup of the week’s top news stories.
