{"id":365643,"date":"2026-01-12T05:24:10","date_gmt":"2026-01-12T05:24:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/365643\/"},"modified":"2026-01-12T05:24:10","modified_gmt":"2026-01-12T05:24:10","slug":"scientists-discover-incredible-way-to-make-plastic-materials-nearly-indestructible-and-then-completely-disappear-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/365643\/","title":{"rendered":"Scientists discover incredible way to make plastic materials nearly indestructible \u2014 and then completely disappear"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Researchers have advanced their knowledge in developing plant biomass-derived polymers that can be used as plastic alternatives, potentially reducing plastic waste and promoting a <a href=\"https:\/\/guide.thecooldown.com\/actions\/support-circular-brands\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:circular economy;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">circular economy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A study published in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-025-65707-x\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Nature;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Nature<\/a> shared that phenylpropanoids, which are aromatic compounds derived from plants, offer structurally diverse and abundant renewable sources for use in producing biodegradable polymers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Bifunctional monomers with silyl ether-linked phenylpropanoids were synthesized, and their polymerizations were investigated using chemical and electro- and photochemical methods,&#8221; the researchers explained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The results offered a material with enhanced thermal properties that could also be decomposed through chemical reactions, resulting in bisphenols that are ideal for recycling and upcycling to produce value-added products, the study detailed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">These <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/chemistry\/phenylpropanoid\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:phenylpropanoids;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">phenylpropanoids<\/a> can be extracted from plants, such as anise, ylang-ylang, and clove, as essential oils, which are already driving billion-dollar industries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">According to the study, they are widely used in spices, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical derivatives, making the essential oil market worth over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fortunebusinessinsights.com\/industry-reports\/essential-oils-market-101063\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:$12 billion;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">$12 billion<\/a> in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">One of the primary drivers for creating resilient plastics that don&#8217;t rely on raw petroleum products is to reduce dependence on those polluting materials and instead, develop more <a href=\"http:\/\/guide.thecooldown.com\/actions\/choose-plastic-free-options-for-everyday-products%C2%A0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:sustainable alternatives;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">sustainable alternatives<\/a> that are better for the environment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Every year, the world produces over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldwildlife.org\/our-work\/sustainability\/plastics\/global-plastics-treaty\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:462 million tons;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">462 million tons<\/a> of plastic, and up to 14 million tons of that is believed to end up in our oceans each year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">So far, recycling efforts haven&#8217;t lived up to the hype, with only about 9% of plastic items getting recycled. An estimated 12% of plastics get incinerated, but the majority is either placed in landfills or released into the environment, where it poses a threat to human and marine life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">There have been new discoveries that help improve recycling efforts, such as the use of violet light in breaking down plastic polymers into their basic components.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Research similar to these essential oil-derived decomposable polymers has explored using bioplastic-producing enzymes to help turn biomaterial into biodegradable plastic.
