The 2026 Golden Globes<\/a> \u2013 what a night.<\/p>\n

Toward the end of the evening, Julia Roberts claimed it had been \u201ca beautiful night to be an artist,\u201d and that was very much the case \u2013 even if the reality of the outside world didn\u2019t quite break into the room like it sometimes does.<\/p>\n

It was an unforgettable night for many, including 11 actors and one director who took home their very first Golden Globes, according to the organization.<\/p>\n

Speaking of that director\u2026<\/p>\n

\u2018One\u2019 big step for Paul Thomas Anderson<\/p>\n

Let the battle to upset \u201cOne Battle After Another\u2019s\u201d award season momentum begin.<\/p>\n

The acclaimed film from director Paul Thomas Anderson scooped up four awards on Sunday, earning the award for best musical or comedy film, as well as a best supporting actress in a motion picture win for Teyana Taylor. Anderson also picked up two individual honors, one for best director and one for best screenplay. The Globe wins were the first for the \u201cPhantom Thread\u201d director, who was previously nominated for writing 2021\u2019s \u201cLicorice Pizza.\u201d<\/p>\n

Anderson \u2013 an 11-time Academy Award-nominee \u2013 also directed awards darling \u201cThere Will Be Blood,\u201d as well as acclaimed \u201990s titles \u201cBoogie Nights\u201d and \u201cMagnolia.\u201d But could this year be his to finally pick up an Oscar? The signs are looking good so far.<\/p>\n

Not only do the four statues bode well for the film\u2019s future, but the room buzzed with good will for Anderson, who didn\u2019t try to hide his glee.<\/p>\n

While accepting the honor for best director, his second award of the evening, Anderson said, \u201cYou guys are being so generous with this affection for me and this film, and I\u2019ll take it. I\u2019ll take it with the love that it\u2019s given and the appreciation.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a washed up revolutionary who finds himself facing off against nefarious entities led by a frightening colonel (Sean Penn). Both DiCaprio and Penn were also nominated at the Globes this year, along with newcomer Chase Infiniti, who played DiCaprio\u2019s on-screen daughter, and an uproarious Benicio del Toro in the role of a well-connected karate teacher. The film was also up for best original score.<\/p>\n

One question that seemed to dominate conversation on Sunday had nothing to do with the genre-scrambling film\u2019s Oscar chances, but, rather, its categorization as a comedy in the first place, which is a whole other can of worms.<\/p>\n

Category confusion becomes a punchline<\/p>\n

Those who have seen \u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d \u2014 an edge-of-your-seat thriller\/political manifesto \u2014 probably wouldn\u2019t immediately put it in a \u201ccomedy or musical\u201d category, but the Globes gonna Globe. This year was no exception.<\/p>\n

This is, of course, a problem unique to this show as it makes a distinction between drama and comedy\/musical categories \u2013 something that has long caused many to scratch heads, particularly among film honorees.<\/p>\n

Presenter Judd Apatow took a long moment on stage to talk about his \u201cbeef\u201d with the Globes stemming from this very issue. In 2015, the Ridley Scott-directed sci-fi odyssey \u201cThe Martian\u201d ended up in the best musical or comedy category and beat out Apatow\u2019s actual comedy \u201cTrainwreck,\u201d starring Amy Schumer and Bill Hader.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know Ridley Scott \u2013 America\u2019s favorite comedy director. Director of such hilarious comedies as \u2018Gladiator,\u2019 \u2018Blade Runner\u2019 and \u2018Alien,\u2019\u201d Apatow joked on stage.<\/p>\n

The category confusion continued this year. Rose Byrne, who won in the best female actor for a musical or comedy category for the harrowing film \u201cIf I Had Legs I\u2019d Kick You\u201d \u2013 a portrait of an extremely overextended mother brought to the brink \u2013 noted during her acceptance speech that she \u201cdidn\u2019t sing\u201d in the role.<\/p>\n

One thing the Globes can say: its polarizing box office achievement category \u2013 frustrating as some might find it that a Netflix movie with a limited theatrical run (\u201cKPop Demon Hunters\u201d) was nominated alongside a movie that earned the distinction before it even hit theaters (\u201cAvatar: Fire and Ash\u201d) \u2013 did work as intended, with box office behemoth \u201cSinners\u201d<\/a> taking home the statue. So maybe there is \u2013 sometimes \u2013 a method to the madness.<\/p>\n

The most notable no-show: politics<\/p>\n

Golden Globes host Nikki Glaser\u2019s monologue was as self aware as they come, with the night\u2019s emcee joking that the show was \u201cwithout a doubt the most important thing happening in the world right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s about as political as the ceremony got for quite a while.<\/p>\n

Though some years past have been ripe with political commentary on stage, the topic was notably absent this year, with speech givers opting to shout-out their families and people inside the Globes ballroom as opposed to the weighty issues outside of it.<\/p>\n

The red carpet was a slightly different story. Several celebrities including Mark Ruffalo and Jean Smart wore \u201cBe Good\u201d pins in support of Renee Nicole Good, the Minnesota mother who was shot and killed by ICE agents<\/a> last week.<\/p>\n

Smart, who won a Globe for best actress in a musical or comedy, later spoke to Extra<\/a> about her decision to make a political statement at an award show, saying that she understands why people may not always want to hear what celebrities have to say about what\u2019s going on in the world.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have mixed feelings about, you know, getting political or making social commentary at an awards event,\u201d she said, later adding that she feels \u201cwe\u2019ve gotten to a point now that is so important that everybody wakes up and opens their eyes, and is brave and calm, but at the same time try to be active.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGo with your conscience and stay involved,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAdolescence\u201d writer Jack Thorne also touched on social commentary during his acceptance speech, saying that \u201cremoving hate is our generation\u2019s responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt requires thought from the top down,\u201d he added. \u201cThe possibility seems remote now, but hope is a beautiful thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

And while presenting the award for best director, Apatow quipped that \u201cwe\u2019re in a dictatorship now,\u201d but immediately lightened the tone by joking that he was mostly focused on seeking justice for his film\u2019s loss ten years ago.<\/p>\n

Spare thoughts<\/p>\n

The evening on the TV side was largely predictable, with Noah Wyle wining best actor in a TV drama for \u201cThe Pitt\u201d and Jean Smart winning the Globe for best actress in a TV comedy for \u201cHacks,\u201d a role for which she also won in 2022 and 2025.<\/p>\n

One first-time winner did squeeze into the lineup, however: Rhea Seehorn, who took home her first-ever Globe for her performance in the Apple TV sci-fi drama \u201cPluribus,\u201d a surprising moment in the night\u2019s TV realm considering she went up against Hollywood vets including Kathy Bates and Helen Mirren.<\/p>\n

During her speech, she thanked \u201cPluribus\u201d creator Vince Gillian \u2013 who also created \u201cBetter Call Saul,\u201d on which Seehorn starred \u2013 for \u201cwriting me the role of a lifetime.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for other first-time winners, the night was kicked off on an emotional note thanks to \u201cOne Battle\u201d standout Taylor, who won for her role as the fierce Perfidia Beverly Hills.<\/p>\n

In her teary acceptance speech, Taylor addressed her \u201cbrown sisters and (the) little brown girls watching tonight,\u201d saying \u201cour softness is not a liability.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOur depth is not debt, it\u2019s not too much,\u201d she said. \u201cOur light does not need permission to shine. We belong in every room we walk into. Our voices matter and our dreams deserve space.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other notable speeches included Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet\u2019s, who last year openly admitted he wanted to be \u201cone of the greats\u201d while on an awards podium. When he again found himself in the limelight on Sunday after winning the award for best male actor in a musical or comedy for his role as a ping pong prodigy in \u201cMarty Supreme,\u201d he chose a somewhat humbler tone in his acceptance speech, sharing a life lesson that his father taught him.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy dad instilled in me a spirit of gratitude growing up. Always be grateful for what you have. It\u2019s allowed me to leave this ceremony in the past empty handed with my head held high, grateful just to be here,\u201d Chalamet said. \u201cI\u2019d be lying if I didn\u2019t say those moments didn\u2019t make this moment that much sweeter.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking of speeches, we heard several from the stars of \u201cAdolescence\u201d \u2014 three to be exact, after the series\u2019 stars Stephen Graham, Owen Cooper and Erin Dougherty all took home awards in their respective categories.<\/p>\n

It does at this point sort of feel like we\u2019ve been watching these actors win awards for this show forever though, so it\u2019s worth noting that tonight may be the night that concludes the \u201cAdolescence\u201d victory lap in the show\u2019s hugely successful award circuit run.<\/p>\n

One person who me may see next year? Sophomore Golden Globes host Nikki Glaser, whose searing opening monologue had everyone from Leonardo DiCaprio to Julia Roberts taking jabs in stride.<\/p>\n
