Zahawi was also the U.K. vaccines minister during the Covid-19 pandemic \u2014 but deflected what he called \u201cstupid\u201d questions about Aseem Malhotra, an adviser to U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who linked the vaccines to cancer in Britain\u2019s royal family while on stage at Reform\u2019s conference in September.<\/p>\n

He declined to answer directly whether he had sought assurances from Farage about Reform\u2019s policy on vaccines. Instead, he said: \u201cI would not be sitting here, nor would Nigel be sitting next to me, if we didn\u2019t agree that we did the right thing for the nation to get the vaccine program to the success that it achieved.\u201d Farage praised \u201ccenturies\u201d of British work on vaccines but defended the platform given to Malhotra on free speech grounds.<\/p>\n
Zahawi said he defected because he had come to the conclusion that the Conservative Party was a \u201cdefunct brand\u201d that could no longer form the next government. He insisted he had been given \u201cno promises, at all\u201d about what role he would play \u2014 but did not rule out becoming a Reform MP or peer.<\/p>\n
