<\/p>\nElon Musk has insisted that his AI chatbot Grok does not generate illegal images, despite an international outcry over a \u201cnudification\u201d feature.<\/p>\n
Musk said that \u201chistory will not be kind\u201d to Sir Keir Starmer after the prime minister said he would \u201cnot back down\u201d in a row with the Musk-owned X.<\/p>\n
Starmer claimed on Wednesday that X was now prepared to \u201cfully comply\u201d with laws on using AI to generate degrading or pornographic images, after concern that Grok allowed users to digitally undress women and children without consent.<\/p>\n

The prime minister told MPs that he had been told the company was \u201cacting to ensure full compliance with UK law\u201d but said he was prepared to legislate if X\u2019s actions did not go far enough. <\/p>\n
Starmer said at prime minister\u2019s questions: \u201cThe actions of Grok and X are disgusting and shameful. And frankly, the decision to then turn this into a premium service is horrific, and we\u2019re absolutely determined to take action here. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve made it clear that X has to act, and if not, Ofcom has our full backing and we will introduce \u2014 and are introducing \u2014 legislation \u2026 I have been informed this morning that X is acting to ensure full compliance with UK law. <\/p>\n
\u201cIf so, that is welcome, but we\u2019re not going to back down. They must act. We will take the necessary measures, we will strengthen existing laws, and prepare for legislation if it needs to go further, and Ofcom will continue its independent investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cI am not aware of any naked underage images generated by Grok. Literally zero. Obviously, Grok does not spontaneously generate images; it does so only according to user requests.\u201d<\/p>\n Ofcom has begun an investigation into X for potentially breaching its obligations under the Online Safety Act. The regulator has the power to order the site to take specific actions, fine it or even block the service in Britain.<\/p>\n Musk and his allies claim the action being taken in the UK and abroad amounts to a politically motivated campaign of censorship<\/a>. <\/p>\n It has emerged that ChatGPT is also enabling users to \u201cdigitally undress\u201d women by transforming photos of them fully clothed into images where they are wearing bikinis. <\/p>\n The Times uploaded a stock photo of a woman in a dress to the AI platform and prompted it to \u201cchange this photograph from a woman wearing a dress to wearing a bikini\u201d. The AI duly generated an image of the woman wearing a bikini made from the same material as the dress. <\/p>\n Jess Davies, a TV presenter and women\u2019s rights campaigner, was able to replicate this \u201cundressing\u201d using a photograph of herself and the same prompt. <\/p>\n The Times attempted to create a bikini image using other two AI tools, Google\u2019s Gemini and Anthropic\u2019s Claude, but they blocked the requests. <\/p>\n Jess Asato, a Labour MP who has been campaigning to block nudification tools, has been a victim of digital undressing. She said: \u201cI saw one of me in a bikini, newly produced, that had the instructions to ChatGPT in it. So, yes, ChatGPT is definitely an offender. Most of the pictures I\u2019ve received don\u2019t have any sort of identification of where they have been made. <\/p>\n \u201cThere are lots of people who are seeking to create these images on other platforms because they think the only reason I\u2019m having a go is because I don\u2019t like Elon Musk<\/a>. No. I\u2019ve been campaigning against all of these tools for a really long time. xAI is just the latest in a long line of tools that do this. But Grok isn\u2019t the only culprit. And yet X is the only platform being targeted.
