{"id":372627,"date":"2026-01-16T04:38:14","date_gmt":"2026-01-16T04:38:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/372627\/"},"modified":"2026-01-16T04:38:14","modified_gmt":"2026-01-16T04:38:14","slug":"selkirk-cricket-club-celebrates-175th-anniversary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/372627\/","title":{"rendered":"Selkirk Cricket Club celebrates 175th anniversary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">SCC is the 10th oldest continuously-running cricket club in Scotland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Its early years were something of a nomadic existence, with matches played on what is now the Victoria Park, and later at the Riverside Mill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In 1871, the club faced a serious threat when Selkirk Town Council announced plans to build factories on their field at the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It was then club president Sir John Murray of Philiphaugh who stepped in, offering land to secure the club&#8217;s future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Selkirk moved to Philiphaugh that same year \u2013 where it has remained ever since.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The club president believes Philiphaugh is central to the club&#8217;s identity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;It is one of the most scenic grounds in Scotland,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Clubs that have never visited before, they say just what an amazing ground it is.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"SCC is the 10th oldest continuously-running cricket club in Scotland.
