Author Jordan Harper<\/a> chimes in on what\u2019s better \u2014 his book or the 2025 film adaptation of She Rides Shotgun<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n “The book’s a little bit better,\u201d Harper tells PEOPLE. \u201cIt\u2019s still an amazing movie, but you\u2019re asking who\u2019s more handsome; this kid that I have some relationship with or my first son.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/p>\n The 2018 Edgar Award-winning novel follows an 11-year-old girl and her father, who is fresh out of jail, fleeing the police after he steals a car to escape the wrath of a white supremacist gang. The suspenseful crime story, starring Carry On actor Taron Egerton<\/a>, was adapted by Nick Rowland<\/a> and will premiere on Aug. 1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\n<\/p>\n Director Nick Rowland, Ana Sophia Heger and Jordan Harper.<\/p>\n Dimitrios Kambouris\/Getty\u00a0<\/p>\n Harper, 49, shares that he initially tried writing a few screenplay drafts, but ultimately made the decision to step away from the creative process after Rowland signed on to direct the film.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s the way to do it, let it become their thing\u201d Harper says. \u201cI\u2019m so glad to be a part of this, but I want to say that Nick is the author of the film \u2014 not me.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/p>\n Harper tells PEOPLE he believes tone is the most important aspect in writing, despite the fact it doesn\u2019t get talked about as nearly as much as the plot or the characters.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n John Carroll Lynch, Nick Rowland, Ana Sophia Heger, Jordan Harper, Taron Egerton and Rob Yang.<\/p>\n Dimitrios Kambouris\/Getty<\/p>\n He adds that one of his favorite aspects of the new film is the soundtrack.
