{"id":373591,"date":"2026-01-16T16:32:09","date_gmt":"2026-01-16T16:32:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/373591\/"},"modified":"2026-01-16T16:32:09","modified_gmt":"2026-01-16T16:32:09","slug":"bristol-boxing-community-mourns-legendary-figure-wayne-bridges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/373591\/","title":{"rendered":"Bristol boxing community mourns legendary figure Wayne Bridges"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The boxer, trainer, organiser, coach and referee was a legend in the Bristol boxing world<\/p>\n<p>14:44, 16 Jan 2026Updated 14:45, 16 Jan 2026<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1_TCBR160126WayneBridgesBRI_02jpeg.jpg\" alt=\"Bristol boxing coach legend Wayne Bridges\" loading=\"eager\"  \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\"Bristol boxing coach legend Wayne Bridges\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">Bristol boxing coach legend Wayne Bridges(Image: Sara Bridges)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The boxing world in Bristol is mourning the death of one of its biggest characters &#8211; former fighter, trainer, coach, organiser, referee and pub landlord Wayne Bridges, who has died this week after a long battle with motor neurone disease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Wayne, who turned 60 in November, was a popular figure in the boxing scene, particularly in South Bristol, where he made his name at the Broad Plain gym in the 1980s and 90s as a powerful amateur fighter, under the coaching of Dennis Stinchcombe and the late Jim Hill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">He was born in Withywood and grew up in Highridge, and was a popular fighter across Bristol, but especially in South Bristol, where he had many amateur bouts, including several legendary fights against Ross Hale, who went on to win the British and Commonwealth titles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">After his career in the ring ended, he stayed in boxing, and became a coach at Whitchurch Amateur Boxing Club at Whitchurch Sports Centre, guiding many young people inside and out of the ring.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">He was also a leading light of the white collar boxing scene in recent years, where he worked as a trainer and referee, and worked hard for the community as the landlord of the now-demolished Golden Cockerel pub in Highridge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Tragically, Wayne, from <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/bedminster\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">Bedminster<\/a> Down, was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in 2021.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cHe had a bad knee and had an operation but things still weren\u2019t right, and within six weeks, he was diagnosed with MND,\u201d said his wife Sara.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cIt was so hard because he was always someone really into sports &#8211; he did cycling, scuba diving as well as the boxing. So this hit him hard because with MND everything is still in your head, it\u2019s just your body that fails, it\u2019s such a horrendous disease,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/0_TCBR160126WayneBridgesBRI_04jpeg.jpg\" alt=\"Bristol boxing coach legend Wayne Bridges\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\"Bristol boxing coach legend Wayne Bridges\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">Bristol boxing coach legend Wayne Bridges(Image: Sara Bridges)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cHe was always doing something for the community, for other people. As coach at Whitchurch, he loved working with what he called \u2018the naughty boys\u2019, lads who needed a bit of guidance, to be put straight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;When he was deteriorating, some of them would come to visit him, now all grown up, and I\u2019d hear them just thanking him for everything he did for them, which I know he really appreciated,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Wayne Bridges with a knockout in an amateur bout at the Cuckoo Club in Knowle West in 1993<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Wayne was a well-known figure in Bristol\u2019s boxing scene.
