Hull KR are nearing the end of their overseas stint in Tenerife, with this year’s training camp described as “tougher than ever” by captain Elliot Minchella.

The 2025 treble winners flew out on January 9 for a nine-day camp, joined by several new faces including assistant coaches Luke Gale and Ian Watson. Fresh recruits such as Tom Amone, Karl Lawton and Tom Whitehead have also experienced their first pre-season with the club, undergoing Hull KR ’s now-traditional Tenerife “baptism”.

The reigning champions have been put through their paces, including their annual Ironman challenge – a notoriously gruelling long-distance triathlon covering a total of 140 miles across swimming, cycling and running.

Former Commonwealth lightweight title holder Tommy Coyle also led a demanding early session, alongside extensive on-field work as the Robins prepare to defend their title.

“It’s been hard work. It always is, but I think this year has been tougher than ever,” skipper Minchella told Hull Live.

“Physically, in terms of what we’ve been doing on the field and in wrestling sessions, it’s been a tough camp. But I think the club gets the balance right between working hard and downtime as well – spending time with new players and staff and getting to know each other. It’s been good.

“And we do a lot of game-scenario stuff with high intensity – it’s physical and with high game speed.

“We’re trying to be better in everything we do, doing more than what we’ve done previously and going that extra step. That’s been the theme of pre-season – being better individually, and then collectively, it raises the standards.

“We’ve been kept on our toes. We have the Ironman every year, but we did it a bit differently this year with some extra conditioning thrown in – which fits the theme of doing a bit more than we’ve done previously.”

One session concluded with a walk to the sea, where new players were blindfolded and led backwards into the water, placing their trust in their new team-mates as they entered the freezing conditions arm in arm.

“One of the lads said it’s like the Hull KR baptism,” Minchella laughed.

“Basically, we’re all standing in a line with linked arms, and the new lads have a blindfold and they can’t see and we walk out into the sea. It’s a trust thing, with your new team-mates and getting each other through it. It was tough, but good fun.

“We do a lot of connection stuff, team building and coffees. It’s spending quality time together on and off the field, building those connections so when you’re then on the field, you’re playing with your mates. Willie is really big on that, and we have been for a couple of years. The new staff, players, integrating them in – it’s been a great camp.”

Hull KR continue their pre-season preparations with a friendly match scheduled against Wakefield Trinity on Sunday, January 25 at Sewell Group Craven Park.

An insight into Hull KR’s Tenerife training camp, described as “tougher than ever”.
