Whether you\u2019re hitting the slopes during winter or knocking out a marathon PB, the everyday gym-goer through to the elite athlete can (and will) benefit from strengthening their hips.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p>So, I asked my colleagues what the best hip exercises are \u2014 and these are the four moves we all swear by for relieving tight hips and boosting hip mobility.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-4-hip-stretches-you-need-to-know-about\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>4 hip stretches you need to know about<\/p>\n<p id=\"648495ee-5039-4382-b1ef-6bb1d240182e\">Relieving tight hip flexors can be done through <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/wellness\/fitness\/im-a-personal-trainer-3-things-i-wish-i-had-known-about-stretching-and-mobility-when-i-started-exercising\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/wellness\/fitness\/im-a-personal-trainer-3-things-i-wish-i-had-known-about-stretching-and-mobility-when-i-started-exercising\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stretching and mobility <\/a>routines. The former can help reduce tight hips and build flexibility; the latter increases range of motion and builds strength through controlled motion.<\/p>\n<p>I like to do both \u2014 I typically save <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/wellness\/workouts\/im-a-serial-sitter-but-these-4-simple-hip-stretches-have-gone-a-long-way-to-ease-tension-and-tightness\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/wellness\/workouts\/im-a-serial-sitter-but-these-4-simple-hip-stretches-have-gone-a-long-way-to-ease-tension-and-tightness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">static stretching<\/a> for cool-downs, while active stretches and dynamic mobility drills make it into my warm-up routines. My colleagues agree. You can adapt this exercise to suit your ability \u2014 seated figure-4 involves sitting as you perform the exercise, which can feel more intense, and you can make this even more challenging by moving your grounded foot closer toward your body.<\/p>\n<p>Supine figure-4 (lying on your back, demonstrated above) feels more accessible for most people. These are all muscle groups integral to running and forward propulsion. Walking your feet further away will also help engage your hamstrings.<\/p>\n<p>The best way to make glute bridges harder for extra hip work is to open your knees and roll onto the knife edges of your feet into a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/features\/i-did-the-3-minute-butterfly-pose-exercise-every-day-for-one-week-heres-what-happened\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/features\/i-did-the-3-minute-butterfly-pose-exercise-every-day-for-one-week-heres-what-happened\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">butterfly stretch<\/a> position.
