{"id":376027,"date":"2026-01-17T23:54:09","date_gmt":"2026-01-17T23:54:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/376027\/"},"modified":"2026-01-17T23:54:09","modified_gmt":"2026-01-17T23:54:09","slug":"matt-damon-says-netflix-wants-plots-reiterated-for-distracted-viewers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/376027\/","title":{"rendered":"Matt Damon Says Netflix Wants Plots Reiterated for Distracted Viewers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/matt-damon\/\" id=\"auto-tag_matt-damon_1\" data-tag=\"matt-damon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Matt Damon<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/ben-affleck\/\" id=\"auto-tag_ben-affleck_1\" data-tag=\"ben-affleck\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ben Affleck<\/a> are opening up about the changes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/netflix\/\" id=\"auto-tag_netflix_1\" data-tag=\"netflix\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Netflix<\/a> has made to its filmmaking approach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tDuring a Friday appearance on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AVEZBy1uAk8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Joe Rogan Experience<\/a> to promote their new Netflix film <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/the-rip-review-matt-damon-ben-affleck-netflix-teyana-taylor-1236474437\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Rip<\/a>, which they star in and produce, the duo discussed the differences between watching a movie in theaters versus at home and how phone-distracted viewers are influencing how films are made.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI went to see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/one-battle-after-another-review-leonardo-dicaprio-1236372737\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">One Battle After Another<\/a> on IMAX \u2014 there\u2019s nothing like that feeling,\u201d Damon said, recalling a trip he took with his family. \u201cYou\u2019re in with you know a bunch of strangers, but people in your community and you\u2019re having this experience together. I always say it\u2019s more like going to church \u2014 you show up at an appointed time. It doesn\u2019t wait for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWatching at home is a very different experience, Damon said. \u201cYou\u2019re watching in a room, the lights are on, other shit\u2019s going on, the kids are running around, the dogs are running around, whatever it is. It\u2019s just a very different level of attention that you\u2019re willing, or that you\u2019re able to give to it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tDamon then explained how that shift is now affecting how movies are made.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cFor instance, Netflix \u2014 the standard way to make an action movie, that we learned, was you usually have three set pieces. One in the first act, one in the second, one in the third \u2014 and the big one with all the explosions and you spend most of your money on that one in the third act. That\u2019s your kind of finale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe Departed actor added, \u201cNow, [Netflix is] like, \u2018Can we get a big one in the first five minutes?\u2019 We want people to stay tuned in. And it wouldn\u2019t be terrible if you reiterated the plot three or four times in the dialogue because people are on their phones while they\u2019re watching.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAfter laughing with Rogan, Damon added, \u201cIt\u2019s going to really start to infringe on how we\u2019re telling these stories.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAffleck then chimed in, \u201cBut then you look at <a data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-reviews\/adolescence-review-netflix-1236150339\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-reviews\/adolescence-review-netflix-1236150339\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Adolescence<\/a> and it didn\u2019t do any of that shit and it was fucking great.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tDamon agreed but said, \u201cIt feels more like the exception,\u201d adding, \u201cI hope it\u2019s not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cMy feeling is just that it demonstrates that you don\u2019t need to do any of that shit to get people [to watch],\u201d Affleck said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHe also noted that streaming doesn\u2019t pose an \u201cexistential threat\u201d and that \u201cthings shift. As television came along, there was less theater-going and that\u2019s still going to happen. And people are still going to go to the movies because of what you said. It feels like a cool thing to do. \u2018I\u2019m going to go see The Odyssey.
