Hyndburn Borough Council is preparing for the introduction of weekly food waste collections, which will begin on April 1 as part of the Government\u2019s new Simpler Recycling legislation.<\/p>\n
This national initiative aims to make recycling easier for residents, improve recycling rates and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n
Last week, the council took delivery of thousands of food waste caddies which will be distributed to households across Hyndburn<\/a>starting this week, weather<\/a> permitting.<\/p>\n Deliveries will continue over the next four to five weeks until all households have received their caddies.<\/p>\n Each household will receive:<\/p>\n A 23-litre silver outdoor food waste caddyA 7-litre kitchen caddyA roll of caddy linersA bin collection calendarAn information leaflet explaining how to recycle food waste<\/p>\n Residents are advised not to put food waste out before 1 April, as collections will not start until then. Those living in flats, sheltered accommodation, or properties with communal bins will typically receive the smaller kitchen caddy, liners, and calendar only.<\/p>\n Food waste caddies ready to be delivered to every household in Hyndburn(Image: )<\/p>\n Food waste currently makes up around 33% of household residual waste and is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Weekly collections will allow food waste to be processed through anaerobic digestion, creating renewable energy and nutrient-rich biofertiliser, while reducing carbon emissions and disposal costs.<\/p>\n Councillor Stewart Eaves, Portfolio Holder for Environmental Services, said: \u201cWeekly food waste collections are being rolled out across the country, and Hyndburn is required to follow suit.<\/p>\n \u201cThis change is a legal requirement and will mean a big shift in how we recycle locally, and our team will work to make sure this change runs smoothly.
