{"id":378012,"date":"2026-01-19T05:32:17","date_gmt":"2026-01-19T05:32:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/378012\/"},"modified":"2026-01-19T05:32:17","modified_gmt":"2026-01-19T05:32:17","slug":"ex-england-boss-backs-super-league-coach-as-shaun-wane-replacement-for-rugby-league-world-cup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/378012\/","title":{"rendered":"Ex-England boss backs Super League coach as Shaun Wane replacement for Rugby League World Cup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"2400\" height=\"1792\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/191109KiwisvGBRLLionsMH_047.jpg\" class=\"attachment- size- wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"high\"  \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Former England head coach Wayne Bennett has backed a current Super League coach to lead England into the upcoming Rugby League World Cup following Shaun Wane\u2019s resignation.<\/p>\n<p>An RFL statement on Wednesday afternoon confirmed that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seriousaboutrl.com\/shaun-wane-departs-england-role-ahead-of-world-cup-after-ashes-misery-111787\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wane had made the decision to step down<\/a> after almost six years in charge with a record of 14 wins and 19 losses.<\/p>\n<p>That record doesn\u2019t tell the story that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seriousaboutrl.com\/rugby-league-news-the-three-biggest-turning-points-that-led-to-shaun-wanes-england-departure-111789\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">four of those five defeats came in the most important games of his tenure<\/a>, the Rugby League World Cup semi-final against Samoa and the three Ashes Tests against Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Now, England have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seriousaboutrl.com\/why-shaun-wane-decision-is-the-right-one-as-rfl-face-huge-call-to-give-england-world-cup-chance-111792\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">nine months to find a head coach<\/a> with the national team set to kick off their Rugby League World Cup campaign on October 17th in Perth against Tonga.<\/p>\n<p>One man who has experience of taking England to a World Cup final down under is Wayne Bennett, the man who Wane succeeded, and Bennett has now backed Super League coach Sam Burgess to take the reins.<\/p>\n<p>Wayne Bennett backs Sam Burgess for England job<\/p>\n<p>Bennett and Burgess have a strong relationship from their time at South Sydney Rabbitohs with Burgess playing under Bennett but also working under him before his move to coach Warrington Wolves.<\/p>\n<p>The veteran coach has now put forward Burgess\u2019 name alongside another England legend in James Graham with Bennett believing the pair would give England the best chance at the upcoming World Cup.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSam and James are my ideal choices as coaches,\u201d Bennett said, as reported by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/sport\/nrl\/bennett-backs-burgess-graham-as-world-cup-coaching-duo-brigginshaw-retires-from-origin-20260116-p5nulo.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">The Sydney Morning Herald<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSam is one of the best players I\u2019ve worked with and James Graham was outstanding during my time with him as English coach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir passion was unbelievable, and they brought the English team a long way from where they had been.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were committed guys, they were just good football players; through their leadership on and off the field, they made my job so much easier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Could Sam Burgess coach England at Rugby League World Cup?<\/p>\n<p>Few people would doubt the passion of the pair with Burgess a clear man motivator whilst Graham\u2019s passion often boils over in the commentary box, however, the latter has no coaching experience and Burgess is just a few seasons into his own coaching journey.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s not enough to put Bennett off though, who emphasised the important of their leadership and passion as key to getting England back on track.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cThey\u2019re young, and they have an eye for it, and I know what they\u2019re made of.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSam is coaching at the moment, so James could be an assistant.
