Cat Deeley’s estranged husband Patrick Kielty<\/a> found himself at the centre of a storm this weekend following remarks that some viewers branded “anti-English”. The presenter was hosting his late-night chat show with guests actress Charlene McKenna, Mischa Barton, and Stranger Things star Amybeth McNulty.<\/p>\n

As the group discussed the surge of Irish talent making waves in Hollywood – with names like Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal<\/a> leading the charge – Northern Irish host Patrick remarked: “We have to talk about Jessie and the Golden Globes<\/a>. I know that you also worked with Paul. What’s it like to see so many Irish actors up there?”<\/p>\n

Charlene responded: “I mean, I think it’s great. I mean, you couldn’t help but…” She paused awkwardly before adding: “Paul and Jessie playing two of the most quintessentially famous English people, it was kind of like, ‘Oops’.”<\/p>\n

Patrick urged her on: “Get it off your chest. Go on. We all know what you’re saying,” whilst staring directly down the lens. Charlene kept her response measured: “No, but it is – it’s so great. And I’ve always said this, I’ve said it before, but a rising tide lifts all boats.<\/p>\n

“And I just think it’s great to see the talent that we think we’ve always had on such an international platform. It’s just great.”<\/p>\n

Amybeth agreed: “Totally agree. It genuinely doesn’t matter. I think it’s the beauty of Irish storytellers. We will always find a way to tell everybody our stories, no matter if it is miles away. We will get there. There’s no choice.”<\/p>\n

Patrick has faced criticism from viewers who’ve accused him of being “anglophobic”. One viewer posted on social media<\/a>: “The anglophobia on display here is rather childish and pathetic.”<\/p>\n

A second person agreed, writing: “Strange that they’re so pleased about a display of anti-English prejudice implicitly understood by the presenter and the audience.”<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, a third observer remarked: “It’s so frustrating what Paddy comes out with, all the anti Brit stuff. And if you disagree you must be a loyalist paramilitary […] He’s difficult to reach because he’s so absolutely certain about his views.”<\/p>\n

The Express<\/a> has approached Kielty’s representative for comment.<\/p>\n

Last week, Irish actress Jessie Buckley took home the Golden Globe for Best Actress thanks to her leading role in Hamnet alongside fellow Irish star Paul Mescal.<\/p>\n

In her first nomination, Buckley was recognised for her portrayal as William Shakespeare’s grieving wife Agnes as they deal with the death of their son.<\/p>\n

The movie, which is out in UK cinemas now, is based on Author Maggie O’Farrell’s fictional novel of the same name.<\/p>\n
