Over the weekend, project backer BP awarded a \u00a35 million contract to China\u2019s Modern Heavy Industries for 7,000 tonnes of steel. China and steel haven\u2019t exactly had a spotless <a href=\"https:\/\/order-order.com\/2025\/04\/14\/chinese-sabotage-british-steel-still-at-risk-of-closure-despite-saturday-sitting-of-parliament\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">record<\/a> in the past year\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Trade body UK Steel has slammed the decision, with Director General Gareth Stace saying \u201cBP\u2019s decision to buy 7,000 tonnes of Chinese steel, worth around \u00a35m for the Net Zero Teesside project, rather than sourcing it from British Steel just miles away, beggars belief.\u201d Meanwhile Tees Valley Tory Mayor Ben Houchen: \u201cIt\u2019s crazy that a multibillion-pound project underwritten by the UK Government, and therefore the UK taxpayer, will be using Chinese steel.\u201d British Steel\u2019s Scunthorpe operation lies just 112 miles away from the site\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Industry minister Chris McDonald claimed he is deeply disappointed by BP\u2019s decision, and said he will be speaking to them today.
