{"id":379198,"date":"2026-01-19T23:01:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-19T23:01:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/379198\/"},"modified":"2026-01-19T23:01:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-19T23:01:07","slug":"customs-intercept-four-live-pangolins-in-ogun","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/379198\/","title":{"rendered":"Customs intercept four live pangolins in Ogun"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Operations Unit Zone A, Ikeja, said it intercepted four live pangolins during a targeted patrol at Alapa Creek, Ajilete community, in Ogun State.\n<\/p>\n<p>Announcing this in a statement on Monday, the command\u2019s Public Relations Officer, Hussaini Abdullahi, a Chief Superintendent of Customs, described the feat as a significant victory in protecting Nigeria\u2019s biodiversity and upholding commitments under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt approximately 18:33 hours on Thursday, January 15, 2026, a patrol team acting on credible intelligence stopped a wooden boat laden with the pangolins in wire mesh cages along the waterways of Alapa Creek, Ajilete.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe caged animals indicated a deliberate smuggling syndicate. Upon spotting the officers, the suspects fled into the creeks, abandoning both the pangolins and the boat\u201d, he stated.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\"   decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2040442\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/The-Intercepted-Pangolins-300x140.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"140\"\/>The Intercepted Pangolins<\/p>\n<p>According to him, to ensure the welfare of the animals, the seized endangered species were handed over to the Wildlife Conservation Centre for safekeeping.\n<\/p>\n<p>He added that the handover was performed by the Deputy Comptroller in charge of Enforcement at the unit, Oluwaseun Oguntuase, on behalf of the Customs Area Comptroller of FOU Zone A, Gambo Aliyu. <\/p>\n<p>The CAC commended the officers\u2019 courage and professionalism during the nighttime operation, urging all personnel to remain vigilant against trans-border crimes.<\/p>\n<p>Aliyu reaffirmed the unit\u2019s commitment to enforcing wildlife protection laws and partnering with stakeholders to eradicate trade in endangered species.\n<\/p>\n<p>The Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, also lauded the officers for their dedication to CITES enforcement.\n<\/p>\n<p>He emphasised that the interception highlights his administration\u2019s zero-tolerance stance against saboteurs undermining Nigeria\u2019s CITES compliance and economic stability.\n<\/p>\n<p>PUNCH Online reports that CITES is a multilateral international agreement established in 1973 to regulate international trade in wild animals and plants. Its core aim is to ensure that trade in listed species does not threaten their survival in the wild, with species categorised in Appendices I, II, or III, depending on the level of protection required.\n<\/p>\n<p>Countries that sign the convention \u2014 called Parties \u2014 commit to enacting domestic legislation and measures to implement CITES requirements.
