{"id":380034,"date":"2026-01-20T09:41:09","date_gmt":"2026-01-20T09:41:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/380034\/"},"modified":"2026-01-20T09:41:09","modified_gmt":"2026-01-20T09:41:09","slug":"social-security-sends-out-benefits-tomorrow-january-21-heres-whos-getting-paid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/380034\/","title":{"rendered":"Social Security sends out benefits tomorrow, January 21: here\u2019s who\u2019s getting paid"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\">Certain Social Security recipients in the U.S. are tomorrow set to get their <a href=\"https:\/\/en.as.com\/latest_news\/when-is-social-security-sending-out-benefits-in-january-this-is-the-complete-payment-schedule-f202601-n\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/en.as.com\/latest_news\/when-is-social-security-sending-out-benefits-in-january-this-is-the-complete-payment-schedule-f202601-n\/\">first benefits<\/a> of the new year, in the latest payment run on the Social Security Administration\u2019s (SSA) schedule for January 2026. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Because of the way the SSA structures its payment calendar, this week\u2019s beneficiaries are among millions of Americans who have faced the longest possible wait for this month\u2019s Social Security benefits.<\/p>\n<p>Who gets a Social Security payment on Wednesday, Jan. 21?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Payments are to be sent out to a particular group of recipients of retirement benefits, Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and survivor pay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Of the roughly 70 million people who receive one of these benefits, many get their payment on the second, third or fourth Wednesday in each month. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">A recipient\u2019s designated Wednesday is determined by the date of birth of the worker whose Social Security taxes have accumulated the benefits entitlement. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">If you receive benefits based on your own work record, your date of birth is used. If you claim based on the employment history of a family member &#8211; such as a spouse or parent &#8211; the SSA uses the relative\u2019s birthday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Jan. 21 is the third Wednesday in January, so tomorrow\u2019s distribution date covers birthdays between the 11th and 20th of any month. The complete three-Wednesdays schedule for January is as follows:<\/p>\n<p>Born on 1st-10th: Weds., Jan. 14Born on 11th-20th: Weds., Jan. 21Born on 21st-31st: Weds., Jan. 28<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Because New Year\u2019s Day 2026 was a Thursday, January\u2019s Wednesday payments come at their <a href=\"https:\/\/en.as.com\/latest_news\/this-month-many-social-security-recipients-face-a-longer-wait-for-their-benefits-heres-why-and-whos-affected-f202601-n\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/en.as.com\/latest_news\/this-month-many-social-security-recipients-face-a-longer-wait-for-their-benefits-heres-why-and-whos-affected-f202601-n\/\">latest possible<\/a> points in the month. October is the only other month this year when the second Wednesday falls as late as the 14th.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Who doesn\u2019t get paid on the 2nd, 3rd or 4th Wednesday? Some long-term Social Security recipients<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">If you began receiving retirement, SSDI or survivor benefits before May 1997, you are normally paid on the third day of each month, irrespective of your date of birth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">However, as Jan. 3 was a Saturday, these beneficiaries were instead scheduled to get their January money on the earliest working day before then: <a href=\"https:\/\/en.as.com\/latest_news\/social-security-benefits-are-going-out-on-friday-jan-2-heres-whos-getting-a-payment-f202601-n\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/en.as.com\/latest_news\/social-security-benefits-are-going-out-on-friday-jan-2-heres-whos-getting-a-payment-f202601-n\/\">Friday, Jan. 2<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Recipients of SSI benefits<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The nearly 7.4 million recipients of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/ssi\/text-over-ussi.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/ssi\/text-over-ussi.htm\">Supplemental Security Income<\/a> (SSI) in the U.S. are typically paid on the first day of each month. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">But New Year\u2019s Day is a federal holiday, so January\u2019s SSI benefits were due to go out 24 hours ahead of schedule, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.as.com\/latest_news\/social-security-is-sending-out-payments-on-wednesday-dec-31-heres-who-gets-a-check-tomorrow-f202512-n\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/en.as.com\/latest_news\/social-security-is-sending-out-payments-on-wednesday-dec-31-heres-who-gets-a-check-tomorrow-f202512-n\/\">on Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2025<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">This is <a href=\"https:\/\/en.as.com\/latest_news\/ssi-beneficiaries-will-enjoy-early-payment-until-spring-2026-this-is-why-f202601-n\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/en.as.com\/latest_news\/ssi-beneficiaries-will-enjoy-early-payment-until-spring-2026-this-is-why-f202601-n\/\">the first of three straight months<\/a> in which SSI benefits are to be paid early: February and March\u2019s payments will each go out two days early &#8211; on Jan. 30 and Feb. 27, respectively &#8211; as they are both months that kick off with a Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Unlike the SSA\u2019s retirement, SSDI and survivor programs, SSI is a purely needs-based scheme. Aimed at low-income individuals who are over 65 or have a disability, SSI does not depend on a recipient\u2019s payment of Social Security taxes.<\/p>\n<p>Dual recipients (SSI + regular Social Security)<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Around 2.5 million people in the U.S. receive both SSI and one of the SSA\u2019s retirement, SSDI or survivor benefits. For January, these dual recipients were scheduled to be paid the former on Dec. 31, and the latter on Jan. 2.<\/p>\n<p>At a glance &#8211; Jan. payment dates not determined by birthday:SSI recipients: Wednesday, Dec. 31 (Jan. payment)Pre-May \u201997 Social Sec. recipients: Friday, Jan. 2Dual recipients: SSI on Dec. 31; Social Sec. on Jan. 2SSI recipients: Friday, Jan. 30 (Feb. payment)<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">You can take a look at the SSA\u2019s 2026 benefits-distribution schedule in full in this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/pubs\/EN-05-10031-2026.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/pubs\/EN-05-10031-2026.pdf\">online calendar<\/a> published by the agency.<\/p>\n<p>How much do Social Security and SSI recipients get per month?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">As of December 2025, retired workers &#8211; who account for most of the U.S.\u2019s Social Security beneficiaries &#8211; were paid $2,071.30 a month on average, per the most recent figures <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/policy\/docs\/quickfacts\/stat_snapshot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/policy\/docs\/quickfacts\/stat_snapshot\/\">shared by the SSA<\/a>. Disabled workers got an average of $1,633.19 a month, and recipients of survivor benefits were issued $1,620.95 per month on average. SSI recipients were paid a monthly average of $714.53.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">However, the SSA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/blog\/en\/posts\/2025-10-24.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/blog\/en\/posts\/2025-10-24.html\">confirmed last fall<\/a> that its beneficiaries are getting a 2.8% pay rise in 2026, starting with January\u2019s benefits. This comes as part of the agency\u2019s annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA). You can find out more about this year\u2019s adjusted benefit amounts in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/news\/en\/cola\/factsheets\/2026.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/news\/en\/cola\/factsheets\/2026.html\">this SSA fact sheet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>How does Social Security send out benefits?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The SSA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/news\/en\/advocates\/2025-09-10.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/news\/en\/advocates\/2025-09-10.html\">says<\/a> it is \u201cin most cases\u201d no longer offering recipients the option of getting their benefits in paper-check form. Instead, the agency gives beneficiaries two ways of receiving payments electronically:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">By supplying the SSA with their bank details, recipients can get their benefits by direct deposit. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Beneficiaries of retirement, SSDI and survivor pay can update their account information online using the agency\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fFmSHpg-ib4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fFmSHpg-ib4\">my Social Security<\/a>\u201d portal. SSI recipients should call 1-800-772-1213, the SSA says.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Recipients can also have their money loaded onto the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/faqs\/en\/questions\/KA-02429.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/faqs\/en\/questions\/KA-02429.html\">Direct Express Card<\/a>, a special debit card for federal disbursements made to people who do not have a bank account.
