{"id":380242,"date":"2026-01-20T12:08:12","date_gmt":"2026-01-20T12:08:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/380242\/"},"modified":"2026-01-20T12:08:12","modified_gmt":"2026-01-20T12:08:12","slug":"honda-admits-to-engine-trouble-ahead-of-2026-f1-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/380242\/","title":{"rendered":"Honda admits to engine trouble ahead of 2026 F1 season"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Honda might struggle in the 2026 Formula 1 season, the Japanese manufacturer\u2019s leaders have conceded, as a new partnership begins with Aston Martin.<\/p>\n<p>F1 is switching to new engine regulations, featuring a near-50:50 split between combustion and electric power, and involving greater energy management.<\/p>\n<p>This is a sizeable challenge for all five powertrain manufacturers, which includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autosport.com\/team\/audi\/49024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Audi<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autosport.com\/team\/ferrari\/36466\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Ferrari<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autosport.com\/team\/mercedes\/36495\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Mercedes<\/a> and Red Bull-Ford.<\/p>\n<p>Read Also:<\/p>\n<p>With Mercedes and, to a lesser extent, Red Bull-Ford believed to have found a loophole in the new rules regarding the compression ratio of the internal combustion engine, Honda prefers to keep expectations in check ahead of the upcoming campaign.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course, if we are going to compete, we are committed to winning,\u201d said Koji Watanabe, president of Honda Racing Corporation, as the brand revealed its new F1 power unit on Tuesday. \u201cHowever, the 2026 regulations are technically extremely challenging, and perhaps we will struggle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt this stage, before any on-track testing, we don\u2019t know the gap to our rivals, so we\u2019ll have to wait and see once testing begins. However, that is not necessarily the case for the internal combustion engine,&#8221;\u00a0Tetsushi Kakuda, Honda\u2019s F1 project leader, told Autosport.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUltimately, a lot depends on the amount of development time available.
