Courtney Barnett<\/a> has announced a new album, \u2018Creature Of Habit\u2019, out on March 27, and a new single \u2013 listen to \u2018Site Unseen\u2019 below.<\/p>\n

\u2018Creature Of Habit\u2019 was written after the singer-songwriter relocated from her native Australia to Los Angeles and saw her long-running label Milk! Records close, bringing the confusion that the upheaval invited into the recording process.<\/p>\n

The Australian singer-songwriter teamed up with Waxahatchee<\/a> for \u2018Site Unseen\u2019, on which she\u2019s in reflective mood, seemingly open to \u2013 and accepting of \u2013 change. \u201cLetting go of everything that might have been\/And if we like it here\/We\u2019ll stay another year,\u201d she sings on the mellow indie rock track, \u201cLet\u2019s figure out the rest another day\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI tried three separate times over two years to track this song, and each time it either wasn\u2019t finished or didn\u2019t sound right and each time we had to start again,\u201d Barnett said of \u2018Site Unseen\u2019. \u201cI kept hearing this really high harmony in my head, so for the fourth and final version, I asked Katie [Crutchfield of Waxahatchee] if she\u2019d be into singing it with me. I\u2019m a big Waxahatchee fan. I really love Katie\u2019s songwriting and her voice, so it was an honour to have her sing on \u2018Site Unseen\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

Waxahatchee and Barnett go back a long way, the former supporting the latter on tour in 2018 and joining her on stage. In 2022, Waxahatchee was involved in Barnett\u2019s Here And There touring festival<\/a> alongside other names including Lucy Dacus<\/a>, Faye Webster<\/a> and Sleater-Kinney<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Barnett\u2019s album announcement, meanwhile, comes after Barnett shared the lead single, \u2018Stay In Your Lane\u2019, in October<\/a>, alongside an eerie video from filmmaker Alex Ross Perry. The clip saw Barnett in the centre of some kind of surgical ward, performing while wearing a blood-stained hospital gown, kickstarting her new era in emphatic fashion.<\/p>\n

\u2018Creature Of Habit\u2019 will be Barnett\u2019s first studio album in almost five years, following 2021\u2019s \u2018Things Take Time, Take Time<\/a>\u2019, though she released an instrumental album, \u2018End Of The Day\u2019, in 2023<\/a>. The album was built from 17 meditative improvisational tracks and originally recorded as a score for the documentary Anonymous Club<\/a> \u2013 a portrait of Barnett by director Danny Cohen<\/a>.<\/p>\n

NME gave \u2018Things Take Time, Take Time\u2019 a four-star review<\/a>, writing: \u201cThough it lacks the more immediate bite of Barnett\u2019s previous work, its softness gives it a more tender focus. True to title \u2018Things Take Time, Time Time\u2019s unshowy songs take hold more slowly, but Barnett\u2019s small snatches of happiness grip you all the same.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

At the time of the album\u2019s release, Barnett spoke to NME about how film had influenced her writing<\/a>. \u201cMore and more, I\u2019m influenced by films more than I am music. There\u2019s such a different level of projection on film,\u201d she said at the time. \u201cI\u2019m quite a visual person, and I enjoy being able to see people\u2019s body language, actors\u2019 body language.
