Guido hears Number 10\u2019s first ever \u2018influencer reception\u2019 for TikTok stars was a total dud. Having finally realised the legacy media is in a death spiral, Downing Street\u00a0crammed 90 or so online creators into the Number 10 garden last night in an effort to \u201cgo where people are\u201d as part of the government\u2019s new comms strategy. There was, of course, a panel discussion on \u2018authenticity\u2019\u2026<\/p>\n
According to Guido\u2019s moles, it didn\u2019t go to plan: the authenticity lecture was \u201cpoorly received\u201d, several guests left early, and Starmer himself vanished after about ten minutes, leaving Ed Miliband to pick up the slack. There was a general sense of confusion over the purpose of the event, other than to snap a selfie with the PM while he was still there. Lefties are complaining<\/a> that their invites were lost in the post, so it looks like ideological conformity was also a prerequisite to getting through the door. Even the food was \u201cterrible\u201d. Apparently they went a bit \u201coverboard\u201d on the vegan options\u2026<\/p>\n Starmer did at least acknowledge the slow demise of the legacy media, saying the benefit of influencers over the dead tree press is that the legacy media \u201ctalk about things people don\u2019t care about\u201d, while influencers \u201ctalk about things that are relevant to people\u2019s everyday lives\u201d. He also assured (or warned) the guests \u2013 many of whom were glued to their phones throughout the speech \u2013 that this reception wouldn\u2019t be their last.
