The current wait to take a driving exam in the United Kingdom, in case you were curious is about 22 weeks\u2014in other words, closing in on half a year. And it seems this backlog has a rising number of student drivers cheating to ensure they pass their test. According to reports by Auto Express<\/a> and the BBC<\/a> citing data received from the nation’s Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency, there were more than 2800 cases of cheating from January through September 2025. That’s a 47 percent increase from the year before. <\/p>\n

The driving exam cheating is not the old-school write-the answers-on-your hand type of cheating, either; these dishonest student drivers are using far more advanced tactics. Nearly half of all cheating cases involved a person sending the answers to the candidate via a Bluetooth device<\/a> or hidden cell phone. Even more unusual, there were over 1500 cases where a person pretended to be someone else for either the theory or practical test. <\/p>\n

It seems some people have made a job out of it, too. In June of last year, a man found himself in court because he allegedly impersonated a dozen different learner drivers, charging up to \u00a32000 (about $2700) for his services. And it seems he wasn\u2019t alone; 96 people have been prosecuted for either impersonating someone in an exam or trying to cheat, according to the report.<\/p>\n

The lengthy wait for a driving test is caused primarily by a shortage of staff to administer the exams. And things don\u2019t look set to change anytime soon: the backlog is expected to remain until at least late 2027, which means cheaters likely will continue to have an incentive for some time to come. <\/p>\n

“It almost seems inevitable in an era of lots of demand, but very little consistent supply, that you are going to get people engaging in risky behaviors, like using a cheat service to try and pass,” Driving Instructors Association chief executive Carly Brookfield told the BBC.
