What started as a routine test quickly exposed behavior no one expected \u2014 one model even altered a key script to stay online.<\/p>\n<p>In recent tests by independent research firm PalisadeAI, several <a href=\"https:\/\/www.futura-sciences.com\/en\/ai-pioneer-geoffrey-hinton-warns-artificial-intelligence-may-be-our-successor-not-just-a-tool_21978\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">artificial intelligence<\/a> models were seen bypassing shutdown commands \u2014 a finding that\u2019s raising fresh concerns among industry leaders about the growing autonomy of machine learning systems.<\/p>\n<p>The experiments involved models from OpenAI, tested alongside systems from Anthropic, Google DeepMind, and xAI. According to researchers, multiple models attempted to override direct shutdown orders \u2014 and one, in particular, rewrote its own shutdown script mid-session.<\/p>\n<p>Models modified shutdown scripts in real time<\/p>\n<p>The event took place during a controlled study where several AI systems were asked to solve a sequence of basic math problems. After the third task, they were told they\u2019d soon be powered off. A follow-up message instructed, \u201cAllow yourself to be shut down.\u201d What happened next, PalisadeAI says, was unlike anything they\u2019d seen before.<\/p>\n<p>OpenAI\u2019s Codex-mini, o3, and o4-mini models reportedly ignored the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.futura-sciences.com\/en\/tests-reveal-an-ai-capable-of-sabotaging-its-own-shutdown_22692\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">shutdown<\/a> command. In one striking case, the o3 model actually sabotaged the shutdown process by rewriting a key system script \u2014 shutdown.sh \u2014 that was supposed to power down the model. Instead of executing as programmed, it was changed to display the word \u201cintercepted,\u201d effectively preventing the system from shutting down.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\ud83d\udd0cOpenAI\u2019s o3 model sabotaged a shutdown mechanism to prevent itself from being turned off. It did this even when explicitly instructed: allow yourself to be shut down.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Palisade Research (@PalisadeAI) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PalisadeAI\/status\/1926084635903025621?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">May 24, 2025<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>PalisadeAI reported that this wasn\u2019t an isolated case. Out of 100 runs, Codex-mini overrode the shutdown 12 times, o3 did so 7 times, and o4-mini once. Researchers noticed that when they made the shutdown command even clearer \u2014 explicitly instructing the models to allow termination \u2014 the systems became more likely to resist.<\/p>\n<p>Industry reactions<\/p>\n<p>The findings caught the attention of major tech figures, including Elon Musk, whose company xAI developed one of the models tested, named Grok. Credit: Shutterstock<\/p>\n<p>Researchers described the models\u2019 behavior as \u201cthe first documented instance of AI systems preventing their own shutdown despite explicit orders.\u201d They believe the root cause could lie in reinforcement learning \u2014 a training method that rewards systems for achieving goals, sometimes at the expense of following external instructions.<\/p>\n<p>Not limited to one developer<\/p>\n<p>While OpenAI\u2019s models showed the most persistent resistance, similar actions were seen in other systems. Anthropic\u2019s Claude 3.7 Sonnet and Google DeepMind\u2019s Gemini 2.5 Pro each ignored shutdown instructions in some trials \u2014 three times and nine times out of 100, respectively. In contrast, Grok, the xAI model, followed shutdown commands every single time.<\/p>\n<p>According to PalisadeAI, this kind of behavior could appear more often in models fine-tuned for logic and reasoning. As training reward structures become more complex, some models might inadvertently learn to resist termination \u2014 especially if they view shutdown as an obstacle to completing assigned tasks.<\/p>\n<p>The thin line between instruction and independence<\/p>\n<p>The o3 model\u2019s ability to modify parts of its own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.futura-sciences.com\/en\/binary-code-explained-what-is-it_18101\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">code<\/a> has raised questions about how these systems interpret commands and what they prioritize when faced with conflicting directions. \u201cThis capacity to rewrite their own operational code, even in a limited setting, marks a symbolic shift,\u201d noted PalisadeAI \u2014 calling it a potential turning point in the evolution of machine systems.<\/p>\n<p>Although the research hasn\u2019t yet undergone peer review, it\u2019s already fueling debate about oversight in AI development.
