{"id":385941,"date":"2026-01-23T11:11:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-23T11:11:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/385941\/"},"modified":"2026-01-23T11:11:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-23T11:11:11","slug":"rare-sunfish-found-on-east-runton-beach-near-cromer-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/385941\/","title":{"rendered":"Rare sunfish found on East Runton beach near Cromer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  Retired couple Nick and Clare McGarvey are from Cromer but walk along East Runton beach every day.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Their stroll on January 13 was a bit different from the others as they stumbled across a very unusual-looking fish.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The fish, which looked very flat and round, was identified as a sunfish.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\"\/>Sunfish are red-listed (Image: Clare McGarvey)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edp24.co.uk\/news\/25676099.red-listed-sunfish-found-dead-holme-next-the-sea-beach\/?ref=ed_direct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Sunfish<\/a> are the second-largest bony fish in the world.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  They are found around the globe, but in UK waters, they are more common off the south-west coast, making them a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edp24.co.uk\/news\/25685054.reason-behind-red-listed-sunfish-found-dead-holme-beach\/?ref=ed_direct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">rare find in Norfolk<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Sunfish can grow to 1,000kg \u2013 the weight of a small car \u2013 and more than three metres in length, but those that reach the UK tend to be much smaller.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  They are listed as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature&#8217;s (IUCN) Red List because they are often a bycatch of the fishing industry.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Ms Garvey said: &#8220;I was sad to see the fish was dead, but fascinated to see it in real life.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;Perhaps it was just too cold for it to survive, as I know that they are normally seen in south-west waters.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;It was quite a surprise!&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Retired couple Nick and Clare McGarvey are from Cromer but walk along East Runton beach every day.
