After having his fun returning to the superhero world of Marvel four years ago, Sam Raimi has a definitive update on the chances of Spider-Man 4<\/a> moving forward.<\/p>\n

The celebrated Evil Dead creator memorably helmed the Tobey Maguire-led Spider-Man trilogy<\/a> in the early 2000s, well before the webslinger would make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut. Raimi did have plans for a fourth film, which was expected to involve the Vulture and Mysterio as antagonists, but due to various creative setbacks and delays, he elected to depart the franchise altogether, with Sony later rebooting it with Andrew Garfield’s The Amazing Spider-Man. <\/p>\n

Both Raimi and Maguire eventually reteamed with Marvel Studios, the former for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and the latter for Spider-Man: No Way Home, sparking hopes for their scrapped fourth film to come to light. Now, in an interview with ScreenRant’s Ash Crossan for his horror-thriller return in Send Help, Raimi is definitively shutting down the chances of his Spider-Man 4 happening. <\/p>\n

The director began by expressing his continued love for the franchise and “the producers that make it,” while also praising Marvel Studios for being “better than ever” after his experience working on the Doctor Strange sequel<\/a>. However, he went on to explain that Maguire’s Spider-Man and Kirsten Dunst’s Mary Jane Watson “have gone elsewhere” as both Garfield and Tom Holland’s reboots led to the original universe continuing off-screen. <\/p>\n

With the franchise “following a new artist” in Holland and immersing audiences “really into his story,” Raimi further opined that it wouldn’t “be right for me to go back and try and resurrect my version of this story.” Instead, the director feels he’s “had to pass the torch happily” and is “honored to have” had it at one point, praising the character and his comic book history:<\/p>\n

Stan Lee\u2019s great character \u2014 that a bullpen of writers in New York at Marvel had come up with stories for \u2014 he created the character, but so many people contributed, so many artists, that for a brief time I was handed the torch to carry on after 40 years of Spider-Man comics. And then after my three movies, I handed the torch off to someone else. And I think they\u2019ve got to keep running with the storyline and the audience that is now following the torchbearer.<\/p>\n

Maguire’s return as Peter Parker for Spider-Man: No Way Home was one of the most infamous surprises of 2021 in the fact that both he and Garfield’s roles were the subject of numerous leaks. While Maguire had taken an acting hiatus in the years prior to its release, and thus wasn’t as publicly seen in interviews, Garfield memorably had to lie about his return in various interviews. <\/p>\n

With No Way Home establishing that both Maguire and Garfield’s universes are still active, Spider-Man 4 hopes<\/a> have been alive and well. The Batman: Part II’s Mattson Tomlin has been campaigning to get to pen the script for the prospective fourth movie, while Dunst and Sandman star Thomas Hayden Church have expressed their hopes to return. Maguire, meanwhile, has also shared his interest in continuing to play his version of Spider-Man, with rumors swirling he will in Avengers: Secret Wars.<\/p>\n

There have been rumors that Tobey Maguire will return for Spider-Man 4, and some reasons explain why Sony needs to bring the canceled movie back.<\/p>\n

However, the biggest thing that appears to be holding Maguire’s <\/a>Spider-Man 4<\/a> back from happening is that of Raimi. In the years since helming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, he has continually expressed a desire to work with Marvel Studios more, but has also stayed cautious on making the scrapped fourth film, previously indicating he had no talks with them or Columbia Pictures, and uncertainty it should happen.<\/p>\n

Based on his latest comments, it does seem like Raimi has officially closed the door on helming Spider-Man 4, as he points to Holland’s deserving priority focus over Maguire’s getting to return. That being said, with The Multiverse Saga still underway in the MCU, and the Spider-Verse movies featuring ties<\/a> to both Raimi and Garfield’s movies, there are still plenty of opportunities for the previous webslingers to keep suiting up.<\/p>\n
