Google <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/ai-artificial-intelligence\/838354\/googles-ai-news-bot-is-still-confused-but-no-longer-replacing-our-headlines\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">appeared to be backing away from the experiment<\/a>, but now tells The Verge that its AI headlines in Google Discover are a feature, one that \u201cperforms well for user satisfaction.\u201d I once again see lots of misleading claims every time I check my phone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Like I explained last month, these AI headlines are akin to a bookstore replacing the covers of the books it puts on display \u2014 only here, the \u201cbookstore\u201d is the news tab that appears when you swipe right on the homescreen of a Samsung Galaxy or Google Pixel phone, and the \u201ccover\u201d might be a AI-generated lie instead of the truth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">For example, Google\u2019s AI claimed last week that \u201cUS reverses foreign drone ban,\u201d citing and linking to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcmag.com\/news\/dji-and-the-us-drone-ban-explained-our-expert-answers-every-question?test_uuid=04IpBmWGZleS0I0J3epvMrC&amp;test_variant=B\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">this PCMag story<\/a> for the news. That\u2019s not just false \u2014 PCMag took pains to explain that it\u2019s false in the story that Google links to! <\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">From PCMag\u2019s story, bolding theirs:<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup ewrhy38 _1xwtict1\">I saw a headline saying that the drone ban was dropped. Is that true? No. While it\u2019s true the Commerce Department ended its efforts to restrict DJI and other drones from import in Jan. 2026, it only did so because it would be redundant in the wake of the FCC actions. The Commerce Department is a separate entity from the FCC, and its proposed restrictions were never put in place to begin with. Some reports on the Commerce Department\u2019s decision have misleading headlines that could make you think the government did an about-face, so I don\u2019t blame you for being confused.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">What does the author of that PCMag story think? \u201cIt makes me feel icky,\u201d Jim Fisher tells me over the phone. \u201cI\u2019d encourage people to click on stories and read them, and not trust what Google is spoon-feeding them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">He says Google should be using the headline that humans wrote, and if Google needs a summary, it can use the ones that publications already submit to help search engines parse our work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Google claims it\u2019s not rewriting headlines. It characterizes these new offerings as \u201ctrending topics,\u201d even though each \u201ctrending topic\u201d presents itself as one of our stories, links to our stories, and uses our images, all without competent fact-checking to ensure the AI is getting them right.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">In some ways, Google\u2019s current implementation isn\u2019t quite as bad as it was a month ago. On January 11th, Google proclaimed that \u201cASUS ROG Ally X arrives.\u201d (It arrived <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/24204770\/asus-rog-ally-x-review-handheld-gaming-pc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in 2024<\/a>; the new Xbox Ally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/games\/799698\/xbox-ally-x-review-asus-microsoft-full-screen-experience\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">arrived months ago<\/a>.) On January 20th, it wrote that \u201cGlasses-free 3D tech wows,\u201d introducing readers to \u201cNew 3D tech called Immensity from Leia\u201d \u2014 but linking to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/televisions\/i-saw-2-next-gen-3d-tvs-without-glasses-that-use-a-new-tech-that-changes-everything-heres-how-it-works\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">this TechRadar story<\/a> about an entirely different company called Visual Semiconductor.
