A man accused of raping a woman in London denied he was angry when she received a call from Donald Trump\u2019s son, a court has heard.<\/p>\n
Barron Trump, the youngest son of the US president, was on a video call in January last year with the woman, who cannot be named, when he allegedly witnessed her being assaulted by a man in London and alerted police.<\/p>\n
Matvei Rumiantsev, a 22-year-old Russian citizen from east London, is accused of assault and two counts of rape, among other charges. He denies all charges.<\/p>\n
Rumiantsev, under cross-examination at Snaresbrook crown court on Friday, denied being angry about the incoming FaceTime call from Trump.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was hard for me not to be jealous,\u201d he said when questioned by the prosecutor, Serena Gates. When pressed as to whether he had been angry or jealous, Rumiantsev said he was \u201cquite used to her receiving calls\u201d and \u201cdidn\u2019t attach much weight to that one day\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cI wasn\u2019t angry, but I\u2019ll be honest I was quite exhausted,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Rumiantsev told the court that the woman was in a \u201chysterical state\u201d when Trump called. During the exchange with the alleged victim, the defendant said he had \u201cwanted to make her understand what she was doing was wrong\u201d.<\/p>\n
Rumiantsev was asked under cross-examination if he had been jealous of men that the woman might have spoken to. He said: \u201cWhat I was really unhappy about was that she was frankly leading [Trump] on.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr Justice Bennathan KC told Rumiantsev the trial was about whether \u201cyou attacked her or not\u201d. Rumiantsev told the court: \u201cI am being portrayed as a jealous person who can lose his temper due to jealousy. I want to just make clear that her actions towards him were wrong and it was not fair.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was jealous to some extent.\u201d<\/p>\n
The defendant allegedly raped the woman after spotting several missed calls on her phone from Trump during the day. He \u201cflew into a rage\u201d when he noticed Trump calling her in the early hours of 18 January 2025, answered the call and attacked her as Trump watched on FaceTime from across the Atlantic.<\/p>\n
The jurors were shown a video, which the prosecutor said showed the alleged victim on the floor, crying, with the defendant standing and saying to her in Russian: \u201cDo you understand?\u201d<\/p>\n
He told Gates it was an expression. \u201cI was trying to make her understand what she doing was unreasonable.\u201d<\/p>\n
He added: \u201cMaybe that\u2019s why I answered the call [from Barron Trump]. I probably wouldn\u2019t behave like that in front of other people, especially Barron Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n
The court had previously seen a transcript of the emergency call, in which Trump told the operator that he had met the alleged victim on social media.<\/p>\n
Barron Trump said in an email to police that he \u201cdidn\u2019t expect her to pick up due to the time difference\u201d.<\/p>\n
He added: \u201cThe phone was picked up. The individual who answered was a shirtless man with darkish hair.
