But the rise of artificial intelligence tools that can translate text and, increasingly, speech nearly instantly has upended his livelihood and that of many others in his field.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkoeqqeh00093b6pujtg2z35@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He says he lost about 70% of his income when the EU translation work dried up. Now, available work consists of polishing machine-generated translations, jobs he refuses \u201con principle\u201d because they help train the software taking work away from human translators. When the edited text is fed back into the translation software, \u201cit learns from your work.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkoepalp00033b6p1w8bzrqn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe more it learns, the more obsolete you become,\u201d he said. \u201cYou\u2019re essentially expected to dig your own professional grave.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkoepm7100053b6p84nfcevg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While workers worldwide ponder how AI might affect their livelihoods \u2013 a topic on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/meetings\/world-economic-forum-annual-meeting-2026\/themes\/how-can-we-better-invest-in-people\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">agenda<\/a> at the World Economic Forum in Davos this week \u2013 that question is no longer hypothetical in the translation industry. Apps like Google Translate already reduced the need for human translators, and increased adoption of generative AI has only accelerated that trend.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkof15g7000b3b6p9gfndzhz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A 2024 <a href=\"https:\/\/societyofauthors.org\/2024\/04\/11\/soa-survey-reveals-a-third-of-translators-and-quarter-of-illustrators-losing-work-to-ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">survey<\/a> of writing professionals by the United Kingdom\u2019s Society of Authors showed that more than a third of translators had lost work due to generative AI, which can create sophisticated text, as well as images and audio, from users\u2019 prompts. And 43% of translators said their income had dropped because of the technology.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkmr0gsd0009356pmab166ub@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the United States, data from 2010-23 analyzed by Carl Frey and Pedro Llanos-Paredes at Oxford University <a href=\"https:\/\/cepr.org\/voxeu\/columns\/lost-translation-ais-impact-translators-and-foreign-language-skills\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">showed<\/a> that regions where Google Translate was in greater use saw slower growth in the number of translator jobs. Originally powered by statistical translation, Google Translate shifted to a technique called neural translation in 2016, resulting in more natural-sounding text and bringing it closer to today\u2019s AI tools.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkmr0gsd000a356pb29zh23m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cOur best baseline estimate is that roughly 28,000 more jobs for translators would\u2019ve been added in the absence of machine translation,\u201d Frey told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkmr0gsd000b356p86wiwme3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s not a story of mass displacement but I think that\u2019s very likely to follow.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/timothy-mckeon.jpg\" alt=\"Timothy McKeon refuses to edit machine translations, saying&lt;strong&gt; &lt;\/strong&gt;it's like digging \" your=\"\" own=\"\" professional=\"\" grave.=\"\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1500\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkpbs6v30003356pdgj99tep@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The story is similar globally, suggests McKeon: He is part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guerrillamedia.coop\/en\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Guerrilla Media Collective<\/a>, an international group of translators and communications professionals, and says everyone in the collective supplements their income with other work due to the impact of AI.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkmqqq1d0000356p5xx7lb3i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Christina Green is president of Green Linguistics, a provider of language services, and a court interpreter in Wisconsin.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkof8q58000d3b6p5mqc3q8w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            She worries her court role could soon vanish because of a <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.legis.wisconsin.gov\/2025\/related\/proposals\/ab292\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">bill<\/a> that would allow courts to use AI or other machine translation in civil or criminal proceedings, and in certain other cases.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkmr2yd1000o356p0e14djhx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Green and other language professionals have been fighting the proposal since it was introduced in May. \u201cThe entire US is looking at Wisconsin\u201d as a precedent, Green said, noting that the bill\u2019s opponents had so far succeeded in stalling it.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkmr2yd1000p356pvvqcb3jd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While Green still has her court job, her company recently lost a major <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/ranking\/global500\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Fortune 10<\/a> corporate client, which she said opted to use a company offering AI translation instead. The client accounted for such an outsized share of her company\u2019s business that she had to make layoffs.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/christina-green.jpg\" alt=\"Christina Green has had to let staff go because her translation company has lost a large amount of work to AI.\" class=\"image_medium__dam-img image_medium__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_medium__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2499\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkmr2yd1000r356prz55rfup@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cPeople and companies think they\u2019re saving money with AI, but they have absolutely no clue what it is, how privacy is affected and what the ramifications are,\u201d Green said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkmr4p48000x356paev9p97x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Fardous Bahbouh, based in London, is an Arabic-language translator and interpreter for international media organizations, including CNN. She has seen a considerable reduction in written work in recent years, which she attributes to technological developments and the financial pressures facing media outlets.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkmr5p0z001b356ph3wi61r1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Bahbouh is also studying for a PhD focusing on the translation industry. Her research shows that technology, including AI, is \u201chugely impacting\u201d translators and interpreters.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/fardous-bahbouh.jpg\" alt=\"Governments should be doing more to protect foreign-language professionals from the threat posed by AI, according to Fardous Bahbouh.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1125\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkmr5p0z001c356p5so4lll5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI worry a great deal that governments are not doing enough to help them transition into other work, which could lead to greater inequality, in-work poverty and child poverty,\u201d she told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkmr5p0z001d356p6u1m9ros@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Many translators are indeed looking to retrain \u201cbecause translation isn\u2019t generating the income it previously did,\u201d according to Ian Giles, a translator and chair of the Translators Association at the UK\u2019s Society of Authors. The picture is similar in the United States: Many translators are leaving the profession, Andy Benzo, president of the American Translators Association, told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkpeafm30011356pp4p1rjah@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And Kristalina Georgieva, the head of the International Monetary Fund, said in Davos Thursday that the number of translators and interpreters at the fund had gone down to 50 from 200 due to greater use of technology.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmko46bpf000k356pgz065z84@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Governments should also do more for those remaining in the translation industry, by introducing stronger labor protections, Bahbouh argued.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkmr5o1i0019356phy6tuzw5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Despite advances in machine translation and interpretation, technology can\u2019t replace human language workers entirely just yet.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/andy-benzo.jpg\" alt=\"Andy Benzo, president of the American Translators Association, says the risks of using AI translation in \" high-stakes=\"\" fields=\"\" are=\"\" class=\"image_medium__dam-img image_medium__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_medium__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2667\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkmr6yr1001o356p7v7p27qt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While using AI tools for everyday tasks like finding directions is \u201clow-risk,\u201d human translators will likely need to be involved for the foreseeable future in diplomatic, legal, financial and medical contexts where the risks are \u201chumungous,\u201d according to Benzo.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkpmkyz9001l356p3p63b32n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI\u2019m a translator and a lawyer and in both professions the nuance of each word is very specific and the (large language models powering AI tools) aren\u2019t there yet, by far,\u201d she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkpgfp9v0014356p0sh8z8r3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Another field relatively untouched by machine translation tools is literary translation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkmr6yr1001p356pdkocthdr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Giles, who translates commercial fiction from Scandinavian languages into English, used to supplement his income with translation work from companies, but that has now disappeared.
