The good news is you don’t have to train like that, especially as you get older.

According to elite coach Jason Brown, CSCS, sticking with a bro split past 40 is a mistake. ‘If you’re over 40 years of age and you’re still using a bro split, you’re leaving results on the table,’ he says.

The issue isn’t effort, it’s recovery. ‘Most men in their 40s don’t need more training,’ Brown explains. ‘They need training they can actually recover from.’ Full-body splits, he says, allow you to hit every major movement pattern multiple times per week without hammering one area so badly it ruins the next session.

‘Full-body training hits every major muscle group multiple times a week, which means faster progress, better recovery and higher work capacity,’ Brown says. ‘You don’t need five days a week either to hit everything, you just need smarter programming.’

The solution, according to Brown, is a functional conjugate split that blends strength, hypertrophy and conditioning into one system. ‘For those of you with higher training ages who know how to push yourselves, you’re often able to get better results from full-body training because you’re better recovered and can push harder,’ he says.

That’s why men over 40 tend to thrive on full-body programmes. ‘You’re not limping into sessions, you’re actually looking forward to them,’ Brown explains. ‘You can do a lot of productive work in just three sessions per week. If you’re pressed for time, stressed, juggling work, kids and life, you can still build muscle, stay athletic and push conditioning without feeling beat to hell.’

For a more sustainable approach to training, and with as little as three sessions per week, Brown argues full-body training delivers better results than white-knuckling your way through a bro split. In his YouTube video, he breaks down his own programming and shows what efficient full-body training actually looks like.

Example Workout

After a thorough warm-up, complete:

Heels-Elevated Trap Bar Deadlift x 10 reps and 4 setsT-Bar Row x 10 reps and 4 setsBar Dips x 10 reps and 4 setsRussian Kettlebell Swings x 20 reps and 3 setsAir Bike Sprint x 20 secs on, 3 sets How to Do the Moves Heels-Elevated Trap Bar Deadlift

Stand inside the trap bar with your heels elevated on a slanted platform or thin weight plate.
