Thurles racecourse has been closed with immediate effect.<\/p>\n
The County Tipperary venue, the only privately owned racecourse in the Republic of Ireland, hosted its first recorded race meeting in 1732. <\/p>\n
Owned for more than a century by the Molony family, a statement said “ever increasing industry demands and the cost of doing business” had been a “major factor” in the decision.<\/p>\n
Licensed until 31 December, Thurles still has 11 prominent fixtures remaining on the calendar, although those will now not take place.<\/p>\n
“We’re going to enjoy this time together and relax now the decision is made and the news is out before we consider our options,” said a statement from Riona Molony.<\/p>\n
“We are very proud of the immense contribution our family has made to racing and we are most grateful to our extended racecourse family, our dedicated staff, generous sponsors, loyal patrons and the wider racing community for all your support. <\/p>\n
“Horse racing is part of the fabric of our family, and we have been very fortunate to have made so many great friends within the industry over the years.
