Filmmaker Taika Waititi is at the Sundance Film Festival right now playing the villain in the family adventure feature \u201cFing!\u201d based on the children\u2019s book of the same name.<\/p>\n

The New Zealand-born filmmaker, who scored raves for his helming of Marvel Studios\u2019 \u201cThor: Ragnarok\u201d but not so much for its follow-up \u201cThor: Love and Thunder,\u201d has also been attached to a \u201cStar Wars\u201d project for years.<\/p>\n

Back in 2020, came word Disney and Lucasfilm were developing a film which Krysty Wilson-Cairns (\u201c1917\u201d) would write, and Waititi would direct and co-write. There\u2019s been little in the way of news since then until the other week when Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy announced her exit from the company.<\/p>\n

At the time, she said Waititi\u2019s film is \u201cstill somewhat alive\u201d and that Waititi had \u201cturned in a script that I think is hilarious and great\u201d. Speaking with Variety<\/a> at Sundance today, Waititi was asked about what his approach to his \u201cStar Wars\u201d project will be:<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m just trying to go back and harness a little bit more of the fun from the original films, which is what I remember [from] them.<\/p>\n

The stakes are very high, and there\u2019s serious things going on, but there\u2019s also a lot of fun to be had in those films. That\u2019s what I was trying to bring back.<\/p>\n

I was trying to work in a world that was a little bit separate to that because they\u2019ve got so many things going on within that space. For me to do something there, it would need to be a little different and a little bit more its own thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kennedy said upon her exit that the fate of Waititi\u2019s project is \u201cnot just my decision, especially when I\u2019ve got a foot out the door.\u201d<\/p>\n

Waititi also says he can\u2019t wait for the new \u201cAvengers\u201d films: \u201cI was just watching \u2018Infinity War\u2019 and \u2018Endgame\u2019 two weeks ago. They\u2019re so good.
