{"id":389753,"date":"2026-01-25T13:29:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-25T13:29:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/389753\/"},"modified":"2026-01-25T13:29:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-25T13:29:08","slug":"oscar-winning-world-war-2-classic-drama-is-on-bbc-two-this-weekend-films-entertainment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/389753\/","title":{"rendered":"Oscar-winning World War 2 classic drama is on BBC Two this weekend | Films | Entertainment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There are plenty of well-known Oscar-winning <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" title=\"World War 2 \" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/world-war-2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">World War 2<\/a> films from Saving Private Ryan to Oppenheimer.<\/p>\n<p>But a lesser-known 1959 classic is the biopic The Diary of Anne Frank, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning play of the same name.<\/p>\n<p>The latter was based on the posthumously published diary of a German-born Jewish girl who hid with her family from the Nazis in Amsterdam in a secret annexe.<\/p>\n<p>George Stevens, who directed Millie Perkins as Anne Frank, had previously been involved in filming evidence of concentration camps during the war.<\/p>\n<p>Anne\u2019s father, Otto Frank, went on to publish her diaries after his entire family was murdered in the Holocaust.<\/p>\n<p>The film would go on to win three Oscars, including Best Supporting Actress for Winters.
