Welcome back to What\u2019s Cooking<\/a>, Metro\u2019s food series, where we find out exactly what\u2019s going on behind the scenes in the nation\u2019s kitchens.<\/p>\n

This week, we\u2019re at home with comedian Katherine Ryan<\/a>, who you might recognise from her hit Netflix<\/a> series, The Duchess. <\/p>\n

Or perhaps you\u2019ve seen her face in a Buckwud Maple Syrup advert? The 42-year-old is truly living the Canadian dream, having just been unveiled as the new face of the iconic brand. <\/p>\n

The mum-of-four let us snoop through her cupboards, shared some of her most controversial British food<\/a> opinions, and revealed the \u00a35 M&S<\/a> item that\u2019s always in her fridge.<\/p>\n

And if you\u2019ve ever wondered what it\u2019s like to get food poisoning in front of Rod Stewart<\/a>, we\u2019ve got the answer\u2026<\/p>\n

\nFirst, tell us a secret\u2026 what\u2019s your ultimate guilty pleasure food?<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t like to think of food as a guilty pleasure, as I just eat what I eat, but I do have a chocolate<\/a> cupboard that I keep secret from my small children.<\/p>\n

When you\u2019re four and two, you can\u2019t have access to chocolate whenever you want, as you\u2019ll eat it all the time and never go to sleep.\u00a0<\/p>\n

I go over to the cupboard and sneakily have a little bit of Cadbury<\/a> Marvellous Creations, or some Fruit and Nut.<\/p>\n

\nDo you have any hot takes about British cuisine?<\/p>\n

I\u2019m a guest in this country, and I feel very lucky to be here, but I have to admit that I hate ketchup. <\/p>\n

Brits also get quite upset that I don\u2019t really like bread, Yorkshire Puddings, or pies.<\/p>\n

I come from a gluten-free home as my dad and my sister are quite severely coeliac, so growing up, we never had things like bread or pastry. <\/p>\n

It doesn\u2019t make me sick, but I don\u2019t like it, so I\u2019ve removed that whole family of food from my diet. I have burgers and hot dogs without buns\u2026 you\u2019d be surprised how much you can eat without bread.<\/p>\n

\nOk, talk to us about maple syrup. What\u2019s the best way to cook with it?<\/p>\n

Sorry to be the most Canadian person, but I\u2019m very passionate about maple syrup. My preference is the Buckwud Intense, and I love to put it in my coffee<\/a>. <\/p>\n

It\u2019s also great in sweet things like banana bread, and you can add it to savoury stuff to really elevate your dishes.\u00a0<\/p>\n

My husband and I make sweet and spicy Korean chicken with syrup. I also use it in marinades for lamb and halloumi, and of course, there\u2019s always maple bacon.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nWhat\u2019s the worst experience you\u2019ve ever had with food?<\/p>\n

I once got food poisoning at quite a nice place in London from a salad, and I\u2019ve never been so sick in my life \u2013 I was sick in front of Rod Stewart and Tom Hiddleston<\/a>.<\/p>\n

I was presenting at an awards show, and I thought I\u2019d be ok to go on stage because usually when I\u2019m not feeling well on tour, the adrenaline kicks in, and it\u2019s fine, but this was such a violent illness that I was running through the hotel to find a bathroom.<\/p>\n

I was sick like 20 times, and I didn\u2019t even know that could happen from salad, but I looked it up, and commercial lettuce is actually really dangerous. It\u2019s because it\u2019s raw; there\u2019s no cooking step to eliminate harmful bacteria. <\/p>\n

So my PSA is to always be very careful with lettuce.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nName one item that\u2019s always in your store cupboard\u2026<\/p>\n

I think it\u2019s good to always have an array of vinegars like red wine vinaigrette and rice vinegar, as they\u2019re so versatile and delicious.<\/p>\n

And here\u2019s a little parenting<\/a> hack: you can also use them to make \u2018potions\u2019. We give our kids little containers of vinegar and some baking soda, and when they mix them, it \u2018explodes\u2019.<\/p>\n

And something you have in the fridge at all times?<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t love bread, but I do love a breaded chicken strip, so we always have the M&S<\/a> Made Without chicken goujons (\u00a35) in the fridge.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll toss some of those in a concoction of maple syrup and Frank\u2019s Red Hot Sauce and put them in the oven for like 10 minutes, and it\u2019s so good.<\/p>\n

They\u2019re a little bit naughty, but they\u2019ve got some protein in there. When you\u2019re in a hurry, they hit the spot every time.<\/p>\n

\nWhat about the freezer?<\/p>\n

Breast milk and sweet potato fries.<\/p>\n

Is there anything you really splurge on at the supermarket?<\/p>\n

I think meat should be very expensive. That\u2019s my hot take in an economic crisis. I feel bad for saying it, but I don\u2019t think people need to be eating meat every day of the week; it should be more of a luxury.<\/p>\n

When I see chicken that\u2019s like \u00a33 for a whole chicken, it makes me really sad, because that was someone\u2019s life. I wish we had a greater respect for it.<\/p>\n

\nWhere do you love to eat in London?<\/p>\n

My favourite restaurant was La Bodega Negra, but it closed recently. My husband and I love tacos, and we were out one night and didn\u2019t know where to go and randomly picked that place. It became our go-to for like two years; we didn\u2019t go anywhere else.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Now we go to Madera at the Treehouse Hotel in Marylebone, and they do modern, organic Mexican food. It\u2019s really nice, but be careful if you go there too early, because they have a weird breakfast menu.<\/p>\n

I also really love Pret. I love that you can just get a boiled egg and spinach there if you\u2019re gluten-free. Starbucks? Forget it, there\u2019s nothing for you.<\/p>\n

And finally\u2026 what\u2019s been cooking lately?<\/p>\n

My husband does a lot of cooking, and he surprises me with food all the time, so I\u2019m very lucky. I\u2019ll get back from tour at midnight, and there will be a Philly cheese steak waiting for me, and it\u2019s my favourite thing he makes. <\/p>\n

It\u2019s just onions, peppers, steak, and cheese, and I\u2019ll have it either on its own or with rice and put some hot sauce on it.\u00a0<\/p>\n

I would like to do more cooking, though. When you have small children, someone always has someone in their hands, and I think it\u2019s a privilege to get to go be in the kitchen by yourself, open a bottle of wine, and cook something.<\/p>\n
