When the species cannot access significant shade and water during heatwaves, they clump together on branches in the coolest areas and flap their wings to try to regulate their body temperature.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Ultimately, the colonies become overwhelmed and die en masse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Federally listed as vulnerable to extinction because numbers have fallen around Australia, there are at least 15 sites in Victoria where the colonies could collapse, significantly decreasing their populations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Fly By Night has been urging the Victorian government to intervene with targeted water spraying to keep the bats cool, and the deployment of veterinary teams.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.news.yahoo.com\/silence-following-400000-hectare-natural-disaster-sparks-suspicion-we-need-you-to-leave-070759290.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:environment department (DEECA);cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">environment department (DEECA) <\/a>has only committed to supporting three state-significant sites at Yarra Bend Park in Kew, Eastern Park in Geelong and Rosalind Park in Bendigo.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Background: A volunteer helping to clean up the bats at Brimbank Park. Source: Fly By Night<\/p>\n<p>Five hours when flying foxes face biggest danger<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Fly By Night issued a <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.news.yahoo.com\/crew-left-in-tears-over-disturbing-find-at-aussie-park-they-were-everywhere-031851686.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:similar plea during a heatwave earlier in January;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">similar plea during a heatwave earlier in January<\/a>, but the response at most sites was left up to underresourced volunteers, and despite their best efforts, thousands of bats died.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Dozens of baby <a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.news.yahoo.com\/councils-drastic-move-to-buy-20-homes-as-wonderful-suburb-becomes-unliveable-180056099.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:flying foxes;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">flying foxes<\/a> were rescued, some while still clinging to their dead mothers, but their future remains uncertain as they face another heatwave.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In Bendigo, 150km north of Melbourne, the temperature is predicted to hit 45 on Tuesday and then hover around 38 to 40 degrees for the week. Source: Fly By Night<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Fly By Night\u2019s clinic director, Tamsyn Hogarth, fears the mortalities could be worse tomorrow, and tens of thousands could die.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIt\u2019s going to be pretty dire. We\u2019re going to have over 40 degrees in some places for five hours, which is extreme,\u201d she told Yahoo News, pointing to the expected forecast for Tuesday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIt\u2019ll be pretty bad in the camps with no support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frustration at treatment of threatened species<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The worst case tomorrow will be significant mass mortalities at multiple flying fox camps, and no one to relieve the suffering.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">While there is a water system at Yarra Bend, Hogarth has been unable to secure any watering equipment, saying she was told it was needed for potential bushfire responses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">She believes grey-headed flying foxes do not get the same level of support as other species facing extinction, despite them being integral to ecosystems as long-range forest pollinators.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWe&#8217;re talking about lives here, but they\u2019re not a priority at all, and it&#8217;s really frustrating,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">DEECA is working to collect and dispose of the piles of dead flying foxes from the last heatwave.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But many parks are still overrun with bodies, and this will make it more of a challenge for volunteers as they sift through the dead in search of the living tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThere are still dead everywhere \u2013 they haven\u2019t all been collected,\u201d Hogarth said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cYou wouldn\u2019t leave the bodies of other species in parks, but apparently this is OK.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Government urges public not to touch bats<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">DEECA has urged members of the public not to touch fallen flying foxes and for vaccinated rescuers volunteering in the colonies to wear PPE.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">On rare occasions, <a data-i13n=\"cpos:9;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wildlife.vic.gov.au\/our-wildlife\/flying-foxes\/flying-foxes-and-your-health\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:they can carry diseases;cpos:9;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">they can carry diseases <\/a>that can be harmful to humans, including Australian bat lyssavirus and Hendra. Rabies is <a data-i13n=\"cpos:10;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.vic.gov.au\/infectious-diseases\/rabies-and-australian-bat-lyssavirus\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:not present;cpos:10;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">not present<\/a> on Australia&#8217;s mainland, and so it is not a risk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">During heat-stress events, DEECA confirmed it prioritises human safety over wildlife.
