{"id":393314,"date":"2026-01-27T15:01:10","date_gmt":"2026-01-27T15:01:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/393314\/"},"modified":"2026-01-27T15:01:10","modified_gmt":"2026-01-27T15:01:10","slug":"erdegard-arkitekter-creates-entrance-for-cavern-in-gothenburg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/393314\/","title":{"rendered":"Erdegard Arkitekter creates entrance for cavern in Gothenburg"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Black-metal panels cloak the sloping form of The Mountain Chamber, the entrance to an artificial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/caves\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cavern<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/gothenburg\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gothenburg<\/a> designed by local studio Erdegard Arkitekter.<\/p>\n<p>Located beneath a residential and commercial development called Kalleb\u00e4cks Terracer, the cavern is believed to have been created by the Swedish military before being used as cold storage by a dairy company.<\/p>\n<p>Property company Wallenstam tasked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.erdegards.se\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Erdegard Arkitekter<\/a> with creating an entrance structure that would declare its presence to the surrounding neighbourhood, transforming the unusual space into a unique venue.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2290400 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/erdegard-arkitekter-the-mountain-chamber-gothenburg_dezeen_2364_col_17-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Exterior view of cavern entrance by Erdegard Arkitekter\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"  \/>Erdegard Arkitekter has completed an entrance to an artificial cavern in Gothenburg<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The core concept was about creating a threshold between ground level, the everyday, and the subterranean,&#8221; Erdegard Arkitekter architect Ida Modin told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The architecture prepares the visitor for descent into the mountain both spatially and psychologically,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Rather than treating the entrance as a purely functional structure, the project frames the transition itself.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2290398 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/erdegard-arkitekter-the-mountain-chamber-gothenburg_dezeen_2364_col_15-852x1216.jpg\" alt=\"The Mountain Chamber exterior\" width=\"1657\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Black metal panels cloak the sloping form<\/p>\n<p>The exterior of The Mountain Chamber, which was tilted to appear as though sinking into the ground, is clad in a series of curving metal cassette panels, arranged to evoke the &#8220;extruded and stacked&#8221; character of natural rock formations.<\/p>\n<p>These metal elements were finished using hydro dipping, giving them both their black colour and a subtle textured effect that was enhanced by the insertion of lighting into the gaps between panels.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2290390 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/erdegard-arkitekter-the-mountain-chamber-gothenburg_dezeen_2364_col_7-852x1216.jpg\" alt=\"Interior view of The Mountain Chamber by Erdegard Arkitekter\" width=\"1657\" height=\"2364\"  \/>A curving staircase leads down to the cavern<\/p>\n<p>Hydro-dipping, also known as water transfer printing, is a surface-coating technique in which printed designs are transferred to a three-dimensional surface using a water container.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The meticulously designed facade system is a sculptural interpretation of rock formations &#8211; extruded and stacked,&#8221; Modin told Dezeen. &#8220;We were also inspired by science fiction.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2023\/07\/26\/cava-arcari-david-chipperfield-edmund-sumner\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/cava-arcari-david-chipperfield-architects-edmund-sumner-photography-architecture-cave-italy-performa.jpeg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Cava Arcari in Vicenza by David Chipperfield\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Cava Arcari performance space by David Chipperfield captured in new photos\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The facade needed to be robust due to the exposed conditions and high humidity from the mountain. Early studies explored timber, but it was ultimately deemed unsuitable for long-term durability,&#8221; Modin added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hydro-dip technology was introduced at the client&#8217;s initiative,&#8221; she continued. &#8220;While it has primarily been used for military equipment and within the automotive industry, we thought it was interesting to explore the technology in a facade.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2290388 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/erdegard-arkitekter-the-mountain-chamber-gothenburg_dezeen_2364_col_5-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Cavern interior by Erdegard Arkitekter\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"  \/>Its concrete form follows the existing shape of the cavern<\/p>\n<p>Once through the glass doors of The Mountain Chamber, a curving staircase flanked by walls of exposed concrete with inset lighting leads into the cavern.
