here are five subtle signs of unhealthy ageing and how to avoid them.

Recovery time from sickness

Prolonged illnesses and frequent infections are common red flags of a distressed immune system – Dr Ghen says a key indicator of health is being able to recover from viruses within 10 days.

Minor illnesses were the most common reason for sickness absence in 2024, the ONS found (Yui Mok/PA)

PA Archive

Acute inflammation is the immune system’s natural and healthy response to injury or infection – but one way to check you might be plagued with persistent inflammation is by looking in your mouth.

Dr Ghen said: “Check your gums – they should not bleed or be inflamed with regular flossing or brushing,” while recommending reducing inflammation with the natural compounds curcumin (found in turmeric) and EGCG (found in green tea).

Joint pain, stiffness, and muscle weakness are key warning signs that your muscular system may be in trouble.

Dr Ghen said: “Stronger grip strength correlates with better muscle mass, cardiovascular health and longevity.”

As we get older, we tend to get weaker and lose muscle strength – but your grip strength can be measured at a doctor’s office by squeezing the handle of a dynamometer with maximum effort for a few seconds.

You can put your strength to the test at home by clenching a tennis ball or wringing out a wet towel.

Hormone levels naturally decline as we age, and these changes can result in mood swings, mental fogginess, low libido, hot flashes, hair loss and trouble sleeping.

Testosterone therapy can benefit those who have a low libido, particularly women going through the menopause.

Pregnenolone and DHEA supplements can help to “keep hormones at youthful levels,” according to Dr Ghen.

Increased forgetfulness and losing concentration are signs of ageing, while changes in personality may suggest a more significant decline in cognitive function.

However, the brain is like a muscle, and can be strengthened by learning new things.

Challenging your brain with mental games or tasks is very important for maintaining cognitive function, as is sleep which is crucial for brain health.

Dr Ghen advises avoiding sleep medication, as well as leaving your phone out of the bedroom and turning Wi-Fi off until morning.

Keeping fit is imperative for your health as you age, with experts recommending at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise each week.

Exercise should be a ‘core treatment for depression’ academics have said (PA)

PA Archive

Spending at least two days per week strengthening all major muscle groups is crucial –
