{"id":394701,"date":"2026-01-28T08:52:06","date_gmt":"2026-01-28T08:52:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/394701\/"},"modified":"2026-01-28T08:52:06","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T08:52:06","slug":"starmer-vows-to-raise-issues-that-need-to-be-raised-with-xi-amid-push-to-free-jimmy-lai-keir-starmer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/394701\/","title":{"rendered":"Starmer vows to raise issues \u2018that need to be raised\u2019 with Xi amid push to free Jimmy Lai | Keir Starmer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Keir Starmer has said he will \u201craise the issues that need to be raised\u201d on human rights with China\u2019s leader, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/xi-jinping\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Xi Jinping<\/a>, as he arrived in Beijing for the first trip to the country by a UK leader in eight years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The prime minister has come under pressure from rights groups to try to secure the release of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/jimmy-lai\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jimmy Lai<\/a>, the jailed former media tycoon and one of Hong Kong\u2019s most significant pro-democracy voices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The British citizen faces spending <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/dec\/15\/uk-condemns-hong-kongs-politically-motivated-targeting-of-jimmy-lai-after-conviction\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the rest of his life in prison<\/a> after he was found guilty by a Hong Kong court of national security offences that the UK sees as politically motivated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Starmer told reporters on the flight to China: \u201cIn the past on all the trips I\u2019ve done, I\u2019ve always raised issues that need to be raised. But part of the reason for engaging with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/china\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">China<\/a> is so that issues where we disagree can be discussed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Yvette Cooper, the foreign secretary, has called for Lai\u2019s immediate release and summoned the Chinese ambassador after his conviction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In December, Lai\u2019s children voiced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/dec\/03\/jimmy-lai-health-concern-hong-kong-prison\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">alarm for their father\u2019s health<\/a>, describing his dramatic weight loss, teeth rotting and nails falling off while in solitary confinement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The prime minister may also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/jan\/27\/keir-starmer-walks-tightrope-over-myriad-issues-in-quest-to-bolster-china-ties\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">raise the fate of the Uyghurs<\/a>, a persecuted Muslim minority in China who have been co-opted into forced labour programmes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In opposition, Labour pushed for formal recognition of China\u2019s treatment of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/uyghurs\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Uyghurs<\/a> as a genocide, with a number of senior party figures backing the move.<\/p>\n<p>Hong Kong media tycoon Jimmy Lai is facing spending the rest of his in prison. Photograph: Vincent Yu\/AP<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Downing Street has said that while Starmer wants to improve economic relations with China on the visit, he would maintain \u201cguardrails\u201d on national security, and would not trade one for the other. They said he would raise areas of disagreement, including human rights abuses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Yasmine Ahmed, UK Director of Human Rights Watch, told the Guardian: \u201cIt\u2019s imperative that Starmer doesn\u2019t abandon principle in pursuit of profit during his visit to Beijing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cAt the very least, he needs to publicly press Xi for the release of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/jimmy-lai\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jimmy Lai<\/a> and speak up for the dramatic erasure of freedoms in Hong Kong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">She added: \u201cIf Starmer leaves human rights concerns at the door, not only would it weaken Britain\u2019s hand and diminish its standing, but it could leave the UK vulnerable to economic pressure in the future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cHaving guardrails in place isn\u2019t only the right thing to do, it is in Britain\u2019s long term economic and security interests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cStarmer should ensure that British values underpin any and all engagement with China, and central to these are a belief in universal human rights and the rule of law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Speaking to journalists, the prime minister played down suggestions that his Downing Street operation could have been at risk from Chinese spying and hacking, amid broader concerns in the UK over Beijing\u2019s espionage activities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cNo, there\u2019s no evidence of that.
