{"id":395387,"date":"2026-01-28T17:52:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-28T17:52:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/395387\/"},"modified":"2026-01-28T17:52:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T17:52:07","slug":"fury-as-enforcement-of-decent-homes-standard-for-private-renters-in-england-put-back-to-2035-renting-property","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/395387\/","title":{"rendered":"Fury as enforcement of decent homes standard for private renters in England put back to 2035 | Renting property"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The government\u2019s promise to make private rented homes in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/england\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">England<\/a> fit for habitation will not be enforced for almost a decade, a decision campaigners describe as \u201cabsurd\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The timeline means landlords will have until 2035 to implement a decent homes standard (DHS) in their properties, despite ministers promising to introduce \u201crobust standards\u201d to combat disrepair, damp and energy inefficiency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">On Wednesday, the government reiterated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2023\/nov\/13\/loophole-adds-to-shameful-rental-conditions-in-england-says-housing-chief\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">its commitment<\/a> to a new DHS for private renters, but renters\u2019 rights groups have responded with anger to the delay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Ben Twomey, the chief executive of Generation Rent, said: \u201cIt is absurd to let landlords drag their feet for an entire decade, denying renters the most basic standards in our homes. It will mean millions of renters, including children, trapped living in poor-quality homes with nowhere to turn.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cHomes are the foundations of our lives, but millions of renters are living in homes that are falling apart and dangerous to our health.
