{"id":395443,"date":"2026-01-28T18:34:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-28T18:34:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/395443\/"},"modified":"2026-01-28T18:34:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T18:34:08","slug":"bakers-warning-after-hair-in-food-scam-attempt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/395443\/","title":{"rendered":"Baker\u2019s warning after \u2018hair\u2019 in food scam attempt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A LOCAL cake and bakes maker is hoping to raise awareness of online scams after being targeted by a rather unusual con.<\/p>\n<p>Sinead Blance, who runs Wild Coast Bakes, said the scam revolved around someone claiming to have found a hair in a custard cream allegedly bought from her stand at an Up Helly Aa food fayre on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>This person, messaging Blance on WhatsApp, asked for a refund \u2013 but upon more investigation it appeared that the person\u2019s mobile number had history of trying to con small businesses across the UK saying they had found hairs in food in an attempt to request refunds.<\/p>\n<p>Other things did not add up either, such as the price of the order and the person claiming they were not at home because they were having keyhole surgery in \u201cHaroldswick Hospital\u201d in Unst.<\/p>\n<p>Sinead Blance of Wild Coast Cakes.<\/p>\n<p>Although the requested refund in this instance \u2013 \u00a314.50 \u2013 is not a huge amount compared to some other scams, Blance is keen to encourage other food businesses with an online presence to keep their wits about them.<\/p>\n<p>Blance, who started Wild Coast Cakes in 2024 and has a cake cupboard in Scalloway, had a stall at the Up Helly Aa food fayre at the museum in Lerwick on Sunday \u2013 offering items like cakes and other sweet treats.<\/p>\n<p>She publicised this on social media with an image of what was on offer at her table, and some prices too.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to Shetland News, Blance said she was \u201cabsolutely mortified\u201d at first to hear someone had apparently found a hair in their custard cream.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving someone find a hair in one of my bakes is my absolute worst nightmare as a food producer and although we have controls in place like ensuring hair is tied back, hairnets used etcetera, things can and do happen unfortunately,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"row-text sign-in-message\">Already a member? <a href=\"https:\/\/account.shetnews.co.uk\/?redirect_to=https:\/\/www.shetnews.co.uk\/2026\/01\/28\/bakers-warning-hair-food-scam\/\" title=\"Sign in\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign in<\/a> to hide this message.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Blance said some \u201calarm bells\u201d soon started ringing, such as the customer being unable to say what the cost of their alleged purchase was, while they could not provide any photos.<\/p>\n<p>With the person saying they were not at home because they were in \u2018hospital\u2019 in Unst, Blance then searched the phone number on Google \u2013 with reports of other scams against food producers involving hair then rearing their head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile I absolutely do have a duty of care to my customers and take things like this seriously, they can have a huge effect on my business if false information was to start circulating,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I saw other businesses \u2013 albeit not local but mostly in the same food and drinks sector as myself \u2013 had already posted about this exact number it all sort of clicked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince making the post I\u2019ve had a couple small businesses owners thank me and share their own stories too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s so important for both small business and individuals to be aware of online scams, they\u2019re only getting more common and the people that run them are getting smarter too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m really lucky in that if this chap had succeeded, I\u2019d only be about \u00a320 out of pocket but I\u2019ve seen scams happen up into five or six figures and personally that would absolutely destroy both my business and probably my life too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sinead at her stall at the museum at the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Blance encouraged other small businesses to doublecheck that queries and message are genuine, such as by Googling the number and asking for proof like she did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis guy did slip up, but many of them seem so genuine and don\u2019t make mistakes with wrong information,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Blance said she started Wild Coast Cakes in 2024 after baking professionally in a deli in John o\u2019Groats while attending university in Thurso.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always loved baking so it seemed like a bit of a natural progression for me to start up my own business,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just me behind the scenes \u2013 I do everything from marketing and admin to the actual baking and packaging.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe started with custom cake orders only, then opened The Cake Cubby in Scalloway, and we supply a few local shops such as Sound Service Station and we\u2019ve recently started doing events and markets too which I\u2019ve been absolutely loving.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s such a vibrant community in Shetland between all the producers and small businesses and it\u2019s been great to get out and put some faces to names.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Next up will be a stall at Da Muckle Market in Islesburgh in Lerwick on Saturday from 3pm to 5pm.<\/p>\n<p>Shetland News is asking its readers to consider paying for membership to get additional perks:<\/p>\n<p>Removal of third-party ads;<br \/>\nBookmark posts to read later;<br \/>\nExclusive curated weekly newsletter;<br \/>\nHide membership messages;<br \/>\nComments open for discussion.<\/p>\n<p>If you appreciate what we do and feel strongly about impartial local journalism, then please become a member of Shetland News by either making a single payment, or setting up a monthly, quarterly or yearly subscription.<\/p>\n<p class=\"row-text sign-in-message\">Already a member?
