Jason Statham<\/a> is no stranger to the action franchise. In addition to joining ensembles in The Expandables<\/a> and Fast & Furious, Statham has headlined Crank, The Meg, and The Beekeeper, all of which played a role in establishing him as Hollywood’s premier action star.<\/p>\n

Of particular importance to Jason Statham’s meteoric rise was the Transporter series<\/a>, in which Statham starred three times between 2002 and 2008. The role of Frank Martin was later taken by Ed Skrein and Chris Vance, but Statham remains the only actor closely associated with The Transporter as a brand.<\/p>\n

While The Transporter went a long way toward expanding Jason Statham’s career<\/a>, boosting his action hero credentials and box office pull, it also had a less conventional impact upon the actor’s filmography by connecting Statham to a bigger universe.<\/p>\n

Jason Statham’s Frank Martin From The Transporter Exists In The Same Universe As A Tom Cruise Character<\/p>\n

The basic premise of the Transporter movies involves Jason Statham’s Frank Martin working as a mercenary driver, ferrying around packages of questionable origin and people of questionable intent. It’s a role very much in keeping with other Jason Statham movies<\/a> of the time, one of which was (very briefly) Collateral.<\/p>\n

Starring Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx, Collateral sees hitman Vincent (Cruise) sent on a killing spree to take down witnesses in the trial of a notorious drug lord. Toward the beginning of the movie, Vincent obtains a briefcase that contains his list of targets during a spy-movie-esque exchange with another criminal. The two men “accidentally” bump into each other at the airport, and swap briefcases during the confusion.<\/p>\n

Vincent’s contact here is played by Statham, making a fleeting cameo and credited only as “Airport Man” in official terms.<\/p>\n

For many years, fans theorized that Statham is actually playing The Transporter’s Frank Martin here. “Airport Man” had, after all, been tasked with delivering a sensitive package to a client, presumably by the same drug kingpin Vincent was hired by. That must mean this mystery figure orbits the same criminal underworld as Frank Martin. Statham’s Collateral and The Transporter characters also possess similar demeanors and the same taste in fashion (both of which are, admittedly, pretty consistent throughout Statham’s filmography).<\/p>\n

The theory has, however, been confirmed by figures on both sides of the equation. In a 2005 interview (via IGN<\/a>), The Transporter director Louis Leterrier laid out Frank Martin’s potential future if the franchise didn’t take off, stating, “He’ll just be a cameo in other people’s movies; in Michael Mann’s [Collateral director] movies.”<\/p>\n

In 2022, Collateral writer Stuart Beattie further cemented the theory, revealing that, despite studio politics meaning the connection could never be acknowledged onscreen, his intention was for Statham to be playing The Transporter’s Frank Martin<\/a> during Collateral’s briefcase drop-off scene.<\/p>\n

Jason Statham’s Collateral & The Transporter Connection Makes Both Movies Better<\/p>\n

The nature of Jason Statham’s The Transporter series<\/a> means audiences typically only see Frank Martin when his jobs are going wrong, otherwise there wouldn’t be much of a story. But viewers are supposed to assume that, 99% of the time, Frank drives around completing missions without a hitch, hence his sterling reputation within the industry.<\/p>\n

Jason Statham’s Collateral cameo offers a small glimpse into what Frank Martin’s life is typically like away from the Transporter movies, which serves to make Statham’s franchise feel more expansive and lived-in.<\/p>\n

From Collateral’s perspective, the Jason Statham cameo adds a hint of dark irony. The movie’s entire point is that Tom Cruise’s Vincent hires a civilian driver to transport him from one assassination to the next, and is ultimately undone when his hostage takes a stand and fights back. If only Vincent knew someone who would happily accept money to carry a killer around Los Angeles without asking questions or getting involved…<\/p>\n
