He said that tariffs are not expected to keep inflation elevated over the long run.<\/p>\n<p>In an earlier press conference, Powell had said that inflation risks are diminished and <a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/market\/stock-market-news\/us-fed-meeting-fomc-holds-rates-steady-how-can-it-impact-the-indian-stock-market-11769629030936.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"policy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">policy <\/a>is in a \u201cgood place\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, the US Personal Consumption Expenditures Index showed core inflation rising 2.8% year over year in October and November. Further, while <a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/market\/us-yields-climb-as-fed-holds-rates-steady-flags-sticky-inflation-firmer-labor-market-11769629874107.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"inflation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">inflation <\/a>in the US economy has fallen through 2025, it remains above the Fed&#8217;s long-run target of 2%.<\/p>\n<p>Rate hike unlikely from US Fed, says Jerome Powell<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to reporters, he also said the US central bank is unlikely to increase rates anytime soon. Notably, the Fed kept interest rates steady on 28 January, despite pressure from the <a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/news\/us-news\/fed-chair-jerome-powell-doj-subpoenas-consequence-set-interest-rates-according-assessment-not-donald-trump-preferences-11768179721613.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"Trump administration\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Trump administration<\/a> to hike rates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt isn&#8217;t anybody&#8217;s base case right now that the next move will be a rate hike,\u201d Powell said.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the Fed is monitoring risks to both sides of its dual mandate \u2014 <a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/news\/us-news\/h1b-visa-freeze-in-texas-governor-greg-abbott-says-texans-come-first-in-local-employment-push-bans-chinese-firms-11769565731647.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"employment\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">employment <\/a>and inflation, but his statements indicate that a rate hike is less likely than a rate cut. There was no indication that either was coming soon.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Broad support\u2019 for keeping interest rates steady: Powell<\/p>\n<p>Fed Chair Powell also said the <a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/market\/stock-market-news\/us-fed-meeting-jerome-powell-led-fomc-keeps-interest-rates-steady-at-3-50-3-75-5-key-highlights-11769621750255.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"Federal Open Market Committee\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Federal Open Market Committee<\/a> (FOMC) reached consensus at the January meeting to hold rates steady. There were two dissenting votes by Fed governors Stephen Miran and Chris Waller.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was broad support on the committee for holding today,\u201d <a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/economy\/is-ai-behind-slow-hiring-in-the-us-federal-reserve-chair-jerome-powell-says-11769652128522.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"Powell\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Powell <\/a>said. In December, too, he said that the Fed is \u201cwell positioned\u201d to view incoming data based on the latest data at each meeting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany of my colleagues think it&#8217;s hard to look at the incoming data and say that policy is significantly restrictive at this time. It may be sort of loosely neutral, or it may be somewhat restrictive.
