CHICHESTER, Inglaterra (Special for Turf Diario).- Third in Royal Ascot\u2019s Coventry Stakes (G2), Coppull showed improvement to capture Thursday\u2019s Markel Richmond Stakes (G2-1200m, soft turf) at Goodwood, controlling the race from start to finish on the home straight.<\/p>\n
The son of Bated Breath, racing in the colors of his breeder and owner\u00a0David Armstrong, won by two lengths over\u00a0Puerto Rico\u00a0(No Nay Never), with Ascot winner\u00a0Havana Hurricane\u00a0(Havana Grey) finishing a neck further back in third.<\/p>\n
This marked trainer\u00a0Clive Cox\u2019s third victory in this traditional contest, having previously won with\u00a0Golden Horde(Lethal Force, 2019) and\u00a0Supremacy\u00a0(Mehmas, 2020), both subsequent G1 winners.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was worried about the ground because Coppull has a very smooth action on firm tracks,\u201d Cox commented. \u201cHe\u2019s very quick and handled it really well. For Sophie and David Armstrong, who breed as well as race, there are many years of work behind this. It gives me huge satisfaction to help them achieve it.\u201d<\/p>\n
He added, \u201cI\u2019m still not sure he can perform on really soft ground. If we\u2019d been in the next race on the card, that would have been more testing. But he showed he\u2019s very good. He\u2019s a talented colt, in the mold of Supremacy or Golden Horde. A pure sprinter, and the main target will be the Middle Park.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cPhysically, he has size and scope, and I don\u2019t see why he wouldn\u2019t make a very good three-year-old too. The time between Ascot and today suited him well, and I think he still has a lot to offer if he stays mentally sound.\u201d<\/p>\n
Jockey\u00a0David Probert, who will leave England at the end of August to ride in Hong Kong, said: \u201cCoppull improved a lot after his third in the Coventry, where he was a bit anxious. It was good to see him relaxed today, and this track probably suited him as it was a bit quicker. The plan was to get as close to the far rail as possible, which helped especially because he\u2019s still green \u2014 this was only his third outing. He got into a rhythm early and finished strongly in the last 300 meters. He\u2019s a developing two-year-old with a great mindset.\u201d<\/p>\n
On his imminent move, Probert added: \u201cI\u2019m riding good horses, so it\u2019s a shame to leave now. But I\u2019ve been lucky in my career, and both Clive and Andrew Balding have given me plenty of opportunities. I leave on August 28, so I have about four more weeks here, including York.\u201d<\/p>\n
Trainer\u00a0Aidan O\u2019Brien, who prepares runner-up Puerto Rico, said: \u201cI\u2019m very happy with his race. It was a very good effort. I think he\u2019ll be pleased when he steps up to 1400 meters.\u201d<\/p>\n
Meanwhile,\u00a0Eve Johnson Houghton, responsible for Havana Hurricane, noted: \u201cHe ran well but the soft ground made it difficult. He doesn\u2019t have the same turn of foot he shows on firm ground. He\u2019s very brave and tried hard.
