{"id":399133,"date":"2026-01-30T17:34:09","date_gmt":"2026-01-30T17:34:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/399133\/"},"modified":"2026-01-30T17:34:09","modified_gmt":"2026-01-30T17:34:09","slug":"mum-of-two-left-homeless-after-handing-over-250k-to-fraudsters-who-pretended-to-be-hollywood-actors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/399133\/","title":{"rendered":"Mum-of-two left homeless after handing over \u00a3250k to fraudsters who pretended to be Hollywood actors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A mother-of-two has been left without a home after transferring \u00a3250,000 to online criminals who impersonated famous actors and musicians.<\/p>\n<p>Jennifer Barton, 44, was targeted by six different fraudsters over a two-year period who claimed to be celebrities such as Vikings star Alexander Ludwig, Sons of Anarchy actor Charlie Hunnam, Westlife member Nicky Byrne, and American country singer Michael Ray.<\/p>\n<p>The scammers approached the NHS worker from Kidderminster through Facebook and Instagram, professing their love and expressing desires to marry her.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They all told me that they loved me and wanted to marry me, wanted to come to England and be with me,&#8221; Ms Barton said.<\/p>\n<p>The con artists fabricated stories about messy divorces and financial difficulties, requesting urgent payments while promising to meet her in person.<\/p>\n<p>The ordeal began when an account purporting to represent the Vikings actor reached out to Ms Barton on Instagram, suggesting they continue their conversation on Telegram for greater privacy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At the start, it was general everyday kind of chat with a bit of flirtatiousness,&#8221; she recalled.<\/p>\n<p>Within weeks, however, the tone shifted dramatically as the impersonator began requesting money, initially asking for approximately \u00a33,000 to cover supposed court fees.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"60e00\" data-rm-shortcode-id=\"9e274a3bece298e7aea569b4f4c471a0\" data-rm-shortcode-name=\"rebelmouse-image\" class=\"rm-shortcode rm-lazyloadable-image \" lazy-loadable=\"true\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%202000%201331'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" data-runner-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/u200bthe-fraudsters-pretended-to-be-a-number-of-celebrities.jpg\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1331\" alt=\"\\u200bThe fraudsters pretended to be a number of celebrities\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The fraudsters pretended to be a number of celebrities<\/p>\n<p> | <\/p>\n<p>PA<\/p>\n<p>She said: &#8220;You are hoping that the guy is legit. I did wonder if I had gone too far, but I got addicted to spending this money. I have this attention from someone and I am liking this attention.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the following year, she transferred \u00a36,000 in cash and an additional \u00a36,000 in bitcoin to the fraudster.<\/p>\n<p>A second Ludwig impersonator subsequently extracted more than \u00a3100,000 from her, claiming the funds were needed to apprehend the original scammer.<\/p>\n<p>Another fraudster impersonating Charlie Hunnam attempted a similar scheme but exposed himself during a video call when his accent clearly did not match the British actor&#8217;s voice.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"727bc\" data-rm-shortcode-id=\"5870ed24a5bf8802d33422725e53b0d1\" data-rm-shortcode-name=\"rebelmouse-image\" class=\"rm-shortcode rm-lazyloadable-image \" lazy-loadable=\"true\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%203812%202541'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" data-runner-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/charlie-hunnam.jpg\" width=\"3812\" height=\"2541\" alt=\"Charlie Hunnam\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The fraudster pretended to be Charlie Hunnam<\/p>\n<p> | GETTY<\/p>\n<p>The most devastating blow came from a criminal posing as country singer Michael Ray, who manipulated Ms Barton into selling her property and possessions.<\/p>\n<p>The scammer claimed to operate a charity that would assist with her bills if she provided an initial payment, promising to send her \u00a3140,000 in return.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Barton explained: &#8220;I sold the house and I spent all the money. Especially if they&#8217;re asking you for money.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In a poignant reflection on her experience, she added: &#8220;There was an addictiveness, when someone gives you attention, even if it&#8217;s a scammer, it&#8217;s nice.
