When the skies finally cleared, the valley revealed itself under a thick blanket of snow – and soon after, so did one of the Himalayas’ most elusive predators.

“Not long after, we saw her again. The same female snow leopard we had watched a few days earlier,” Novales wrote. He explained that the leopard had left her two cubs at the bottom of a gorge before climbing all the way to the top on her own. From there, she began stalking a group of ibex grazing in the distance.

“Watching her move through the snow was unreal. Slow. Silent. Completely focused,” he recalled. The leopard managed to get very close and launched herself at the largest male ibex in the group.

At first, it appeared the hunt might end quickly. “She went straight for the biggest male. At first, it looked like she might bring him down quickly. But the ibex fought back,” Novales wrote.

The video he shared captured the intense struggle in detail, as the snow leopard can be seen pouncing on the ibex from behind, latching onto it as the animal desperately tries to escape on the steep, icy terrain. As Novales described it, the ibex “broke into a full sprint, running straight toward the cliff, with the leopard still attached to his back. They slipped and crashed multiple times, rolling through rocks and snow. Neither of them let go.”

The pair tumbled several metres down the slope, narrowly avoiding a fatal fall. “They fell several meters, slamming into the slope just seconds before the edge. One more fall and both could have fallen to a certain death,” he added.

In a heart-stopping final moment, the snow leopard lost her grip. “That split second allowed the ibex to change direction and escape. She chased him briefly, but the hunt was over,” Novales wrote.

The witnesses were left visibly shaken by what they had just seen. “We stood there shaking, trying to process what we had just witnessed. I’ve seen a lot in the wild, but this moment takes the prize,” he concluded.

Watch the video here:

The clip received admiration from wildlife lovers and photographers in the comments section.

One user commented, “Awesome time! Congratulations Andres, something like this is never forgotten, this is for life.”

Another wrote, “How crazy is that?! Wow!!! And well done on capturing the whole scene from start to finish.”

Snow leopards are known for their stealth and strength, but sightings of active hunts, especially ones so close to cliffs, are exceptionally rare. Several users mentioned how the clip offered a raw glimpse into the brutal, high-stakes reality of survival in the high-altitude wilderness.

– Ends

Published By:

Yashna Talwar

Published On:

Jan 30, 2026

A man shared a video of a breathtaking wildlife encounter from Himachal Pradesh involving a snow leopard and…

[26
55270,149624,15936,149621,149622,149623,90,15938,56,54,55,149625,4407,129885,20525
post-399812","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-wildlife","tag-andres-novales","tag-cliffside-hunt","tag-himalayas","tag-ibex","tag-kibber","tag-rare-animal-sighting","tag-science","tag-snow-leopard","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom","tag-wild-survival","tag-wildlife","tag-wildlife-encounter","tag-wildlife-photography
["GET
