I photographed my first polar plunge on January 1, 2024. It was always a fun event with silly hats and tiaras; superheroes and mythological creatures. I always looked forward to seeing what the members of @beardedvillanstoronto would conjure up: imagine big, burly, bearded men dressed as ballerinas, Vikings and (one year) as sexy lumberjacks — you could never guess what they would come up with! Although all events were cancelled during the pandemic years, I still went down to the lake to capture committed "dippers" taking the plunge in small groups of two and three - no costumes, no hype. At that time taking the plunge was an opportunity to just do something silly and laugh at a time that was decidedly not fun. On New Year's Day this year, I photographed two different plunges and I only just noticed that the events have changed since the pandemic. They still continue to raise money for charity. There is still lots of enthusiasm, energy and laughter. But this year there were no unicorns, no mermaids and only a few silly hats and masks. Stripped of all the costumes, what I noticed most this year was the relationships; the feeling of togetherness; the visible joy of doing something outrageous with loved ones in a crowd full of strangers." width="640" height="427"/>

©Tracey Suba, Together, @traceysuba, http://www.traceysubaphotography.com/

© Zinuo__, Skating, 2025

Posts on Lenscratch may not be reproduced without the permission of the Lenscratch staff and the photographer.

© Melina Barberi, @melina.barberi For our second online exhibition of the year, LENSCRATCH is thrilled to present the work of an eclectic group…

[31
6225,6485,6486,1120,96,56,54,55
post-401201","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-arts-and-design","tag-arts","tag-arts-and-design","tag-artsanddesign","tag-design","tag-entertainment","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
