For decades, The Rolling Stones <\/a>have been called the best rock \u2018n\u2019 roll band in the world, but Mick Jagger finds the praise \u201cembarrassing\u201d, and ultimately, the singer thinks it is a pointless gesture, despite the good intentions.<\/p>\n

The Stones are now into their 60th year and have been putting on masterclasses in stadiums for the majority of that time. They\u2019ve had countless hit records, released seminal albums, and put on an extravaganza whenever they perform live. However, the beauty of music is that it is subjective and is completely down to taste.<\/p>\n

While they have achieved more than any other active band on the planet, music is measured by the magical feeling it elicits inside us, and record sales shouldn\u2019t be the deciding factor. No matter how great The Rolling Stones<\/a> were in their pomp \u2013 and continue to be today \u2013 they aren\u2019t to the taste of everybody.<\/p>\n

The \u2018greatest band of all time\u2019 term has been used constantly to describe the group for around 50 years, and they\u2019ve never been a fan of it. When you\u2019ve created a backlog of songs as excellent as The Stones, you don\u2019t need to blow your own trumpet, but conversely, it\u2019s understandable why they\u2019ve picked up that title.<\/p>\n

During an interview with Rolling Stone in 1995, Jagger opened up on why he hated the term and made a compelling argument against it. \u201cIt\u2019s just a stupid epithet. It just seems too Barnum and Bailey to me \u2013 like it\u2019s some sort of circus act,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cThe first time we heard it said was to introduce us every night. So I used to say, \u2018Will you please not use that as your announcement? It\u2019s so embarrassing. And what does that mean? Does it mean the best, the biggest, the most long-lasting.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Keith Richards shared the same stance and rebuffed the suggestion back in 1978 during an interview. \u201c[O]n any given night, it\u2019s a different band that\u2019s the greatest rock \u2018n\u2019 roll band in the world,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Music isn\u2019t meant to be delivered in such flat terms. When discussing an art form that not only captures the high points of rock and roll but also the lowest ebbs of human existence, it\u2019s not right to provide just a simple phrasing to denote a subjective moniker. Although many people participate, Jagger never felt like music was meant to be a competitive sport and reducing the experience to a marketing hook just felt wrong.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s not to say that the Stones have ever been a group to avoid a marketing ploy. The band once drove a flatbed truck down the centre of a New York street to promote an album launch. So it\u2019s not hard to imagine the band creating themselves a banner to celebrate the apparent award. But, it would seem, even for Jagger, that was too far.<\/p>\n

The world\u2019s greatest rock \u2018n\u2019 roll band will differ from person to person, depending on individual taste. While many metrics would suggest The Stones are the best to do it, when did we ever let statistics rule the roost over the heart? Besides, the Rolling Stones already have enough achievements; they don\u2019t need a meaningless title.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
