Cases of Nipah virus have been reported in parts of Asia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In an <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/ukhsa.blog.gov.uk\/2026\/01\/27\/nipah-virus-what-is-it-where-is-it-found-and-how-does-it-spread\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">update<\/a>, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) explained that understanding the virus is \u201cimportant\u201d if you are planning to <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/world-news\/nipah-virus-travellers-warned-over-36630175\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">travel to one of the areas where it circulates<\/a>. The natural hosts of the virus are fruit bats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">But there is evidence that Nipah virus can infect other animals. Human outbreaks of Nipah virus have only been identified in South and South-East Asia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Most recently, an <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/health\/nipah-virus-top-virologists-outline-36638445\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">outbreak has been reported in West Bengal in India<\/a>, however, previously affected countries include:<\/p>\n<p>BangladeshIndiaMalaysiaThe PhilippinesSingaporeSymptoms<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">According to the UKHSA, the incubation period (the time between becoming infected and symptoms appearing) is typically four to 21 days. Symptoms usually begin with the sudden \u2013 onset of non-specific flu-like illness or fever.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Pneumonia and other respiratory problems may also develop. The UKHSA said: \u201cThe most serious complication is encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/lifestyle\/health\/meningitis-symptoms-signs-menb-vaccine-7394355\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">meningitis<\/a>, which typically develops three to 21 days after the initial illness begins.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThis is the hallmark of Nipah infection and is associated with a very high mortality rate.\u201d The virus has a high mortality rate among humans.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Fruit bat\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/0_GettyImages-2229616406.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\" The natural hosts of the virus are fruit bats\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\"> The natural hosts of the virus are fruit bats(Image: Getty)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cIt is estimated that between 40 and 75 per cent of people infected with Nipah virus will die,\u201d the UKHSA said. \u201cSome survivors may be left with lasting neurological difficulties, including persistent seizures and personality changes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cIn rare cases, the virus can reactivate months or even years after the initial infection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Transmission<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Human infections can occur through direct contact with an infected animal and their secretions. This has been documented in Bangladesh and India, most commonly among family members and close contacts caring for infected patients.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThose with respiratory symptoms may pose a transmission risk.\u201d Currently, there is no proven specific treatment for Nipah virus infection, and no preventative vaccine.<\/p>\n<p>Advice for travellers<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">To stay safe, the UKHSA recommends the following steps if you are travelling to an affected area:<\/p>\n<p>Avoid contact with bats and their environments, and sick animalsDon&#8217;t consume raw or partially fermented date palm sap &#8211; if consuming date palm juice, ensure it has been boiled firstWash all fruit thoroughly with clean water and peel before eating; avoid consuming fruit found on the ground or fruit that appears to have been partially eaten by animalsWear protective clothing and gloves when handling sick animals and during slaughter and culling proceduresPractise good hand hygiene, particularly after caring for or visiting sick peopleAvoid close, unprotected contact with anyone infected with Nipah virus, including contact with their blood or body fluids<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The UKHSA said: \u201cIf you develop symptoms while overseas in an endemic area, seek advice from a health professional immediately.
