As the \u201970s dawned, West lost a riding companion but gained a bike, proving that there\u2019s always a silver lining.<\/p>\n<p>As an amateur, West was seemingly glued to the top step of every podium, winning, among numerous other titles, the British National Road Championship in 1965 and 1978 and the Milk Race in 1965 and 1967. Returning home uncharacteristically empty-handed from the 1968 Mexico <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/olympics\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/olympics\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/olympics\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Olympics<\/a>, he made the leap to pro by joining Roy Thame\u2019s Holdsworth team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:66.68%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/kjxBDcnSTwpQdNzhoVEDtj.jpg\" alt=\"Cinelli handlebar and stem on Les Wests 70s Holdsworth\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/kjxBDcnSTwpQdNzhoVEDtj.jpg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/kjxBDcnSTwpQdNzhoVEDtj.jpg\" class=\"inline\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>Cinelli bars and stem were de-rigueur on the pro race scene in the 70s (Image credit: Future)<\/p>\n<p id=\"1669dbe2-b1a9-466d-a9cb-4538cbeac07f\">\u201cI met Les at this year\u2019s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/comment\/comment-take-moment-remember-tom-simpson-341620\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/comment\/comment-take-moment-remember-tom-simpson-341620\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/comment\/comment-take-moment-remember-tom-simpson-341620\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tom Simpson<\/a> Cycling Festival,\u201d says owner Richard Hoddinott of vintage specialists Velo Pages. \u201cAlthough he couldn\u2019t remember exactly which races he rode this Holdsworth on, he fondly recalled racing it many times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p>One of those high-profile races might have been the 1970 <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/road-world-championships\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/road-world-championships\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/road-world-championships\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cycling World Championships<\/a> in Leicester, though team mechanic Dick Brodrick believes the bike may have been a spare.
