Well, that was a less charged affair than last year, though still full of emotional moments \u2013 the best new artist win for Olivia Dean, a surprise pop solo performance win for Lola Young, the star-studded tributes to D\u2019Angelo and Ozzy Osbourne, and chiefly the big album of the year win for Bad Bunny<\/a>, the first majority Spanish-language album to do so.<\/p>\n The Puerto Rican superstar was an affable, gracious presence throughout the ceremony \u2013 his ongoing bit with Trevor Noah, trying to get the singer who\u2019s contractually barred from performing (because Super Bowl) to sing, was the best of a show that spread the love around. The night\u2019s top-nominated artist, Kendrick Lamar<\/a>, took home five awards (two during the telecast), becoming the most-decorated rapper in Grammys history with 27 total awards. Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas, along with Grammys stalwart Lady Gaga, rounded out the televised award winners.<\/p>\n But it was Bad Bunny, usually so cool and collected, being moved to tears by the big win, clearly processing the enormity of the moment, that will stick with me. This show took place during an extremely intense time in the US, with widespread protest over the Trump administration\u2019s brutal immigration crackdown, particularly on Spanish speakers. And the violence was top of mind for many winners, from Eilish to Dean and of course Bad Bunny, who asserted: \u201cICE out. We\u2019re not savages, we\u2019re not animals, we are humans and we are Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n And with that, the Grammys<\/a> are through. Thanks for sticking with us! We\u2019ll see you next year. We\u2019re not savage, we\u2019re not animals, we\u2019re not aliens, we\u2019re humans and we are Americans \u2026 The only thing more powerful than hate is love so please we need to be different. If we fight, we have to do it with love. We don\u2019t hate them, we love our people, we love our families and that\u2019s the way to do it, we love.\u201d<\/p>\n Kehlani: \u201cI wanted to say fuck ICE. I think everybody \u2013 we\u2019re too powerful of a group to all be in a room at the same time and not make some kind of statement in our country, so it\u2019s brainless to me.\u201d<\/p>\n Billie Eilish: \u201cNo one is illegal on stolen land. It\u2019s really hard to know what to say or what to do right now. \u2026 we need to keep fighting and speaking up and protesting.\u201d<\/p>\n Olivia Dean: \u201cI am up here as the grand-daughter of an immigrant. I\u2019m a product of bravery and I think those people deserve to be celebrated.\u201d<\/p>\n SZA: \u201cPlease don\u2019t fall into despair \u2026 We can go on, we need each other \u2026 we\u2019re not governed by the government, we\u2019re governed by God.\u201d<\/p>\n Gloria Estefan: \u201cI don\u2019t think anyone would say we want a free-for-all at the border. But what is happening is not at all criminals being arrested. These are people that have families that have contributed to this country for decades. Little children \u2013 there\u2019s hundreds of children in detention centers \u2026 I hope that our government listens to our plea for humanity, which is the main thing we need.\u201d<\/p>\n Share<\/a><\/p>\n Updated at\u00a000.02 EST<\/p>\n The most thrilling, and surely most expensive, performance of the night:<\/p>\n Share<\/a> Here\u2019s a look back at the most striking outfits on the red carpet:<\/p>\n Share<\/a>WINNER: Bad Bunny, Deb\u00ed Tirar M\u00e1s Fotos \u2013 album of the year Oh wow, I thought the momentum was with Kendrick Lamar<\/a> but the night\u2019s biggest award does, indeed, go to the favorite: Bad Bunny, who was so overwhelmed that he sat in his chair, head in his hands, for a full 10 seconds before taking the stage.<\/p>\n I get it \u2013 his magnum opus, Deb\u00ed Tirar M\u00e1s Fotos, a vivid exploration of Latin music traditions made by returning to Puerto Rico, is the first majority Spanish-language album to win this award, and I don\u2019t need to spell out the symbolism of that in the US right now, when ICE is profiling people who speak the language.<\/p>\n Bad Bunny, fittingly, delivers the bulk of his speech in Spanish (translation forthcoming). In English: \u201cI want to dedicate this award to all the people who had to leave their homeland, their country, to follow their dreams.\u201d Hard not to get emotional at that. What a way to head into the Super Bowl next Sunday!<\/p>\n Share<\/a><\/p>\n Updated at\u00a000.02 EST<\/p>\n Technically the show was supposed to end at 8.30pm local time, so surely this must be the last or next to last performance of the night, and it\u2019s a strong one: the brothers Gene and Terrence Thornton, aka Malice and Pusha T, of rap dup Clipse, along with their longtime friend, fellow Virginia native and producer Pharrell, making it snow in LA.<\/p>\n Share<\/a><\/p>\n Updated at\u00a023.42 EST<\/p>\n WINNER: Kendrick Lamar with SZA, Luther \u2013 record of the year OK so Cher botched the winner envelope (lol) and then said \u201cLuther Vandross\u201d (LOL) before correcting herself to the real winners \u2026 Kendrick Lamar<\/a> and SZA for their song Luther, which is indeed a tribute to the late soul singer Luther Vandross.<\/p>\n \u201cLet\u2019s give a shout out to the late great Luther Vandross,\u201d joked producer Sounwave \u2013 except it\u2019s not a joke, as Lamar added that getting clearance from the Vandross estate to sample his song made him shed a tear. (He respected their request for no cursing.)<\/p>\n Added SZA, speaking more broadly: \u201cPlease don\u2019t fall into despair. I know it\u2019s a scary time\u2026we can go on, we need each other, we need to trust each other.\u201d<\/p>\n And added Noah: \u201cI love live television.\u201d<\/p>\n Share<\/a><\/p>\n Updated at\u00a023.43 EST<\/p>\n The head of the Recording Academy, Harvey Mason Jr, came out for his obligatory paean to the power of music, but it turns into a bizarre lifetime achievement celebration for the icon that is Cher.<\/p>\n Cher. Photograph: Chris Pizzello\/Invision\/AP<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s a good thing that they did it now,\u201d she joked before rambling through an acceptance speech when she was maybe supposed to announce the nominees for record of the year \u2013 how she was \u201ceither on the top or the bottom\u201d, either \u201closing or winning an Oscar\u201d, in the \u201celephant\u2019s graveyard\u201d of Las Vegas and becoming the first artist to use autotune (I\u2019m going to trust her on that).<\/p>\n \u201cNever give up on your dream no matter what happens. Huge for Brits:<\/p>\n Share<\/a> We\u2019re deep in the in memoriam section now, with Ms Lauryn Hill (!) on stage to celebrate the life and legacy of D\u2019Angelo, starting with their duet Nothing Even Matters.<\/p>\n Ms Hill then emcees a veritable who\u2019s who of R&B stars in honor of both D\u2019Angelo and the late Roberta Flack: Lucky Daye (for D\u2019Angelo track Brown Sugar), Leon Thomas, Bilal (for a rousing rendition of Untitled (How Does It Feel)), Leon Bridges, Jon Batiste, John Legend and Chaka Khan, to name a few.<\/p>\n And for the exclamation point, she\u2019s joined by Wyclef Jean on guitar, for both an original and Fugees version of Flack\u2019s Killing Me Softly. Best believe everyone got on their feet for that one, an impressive finale to an extra-stacked tribute.<\/p>\n Share<\/a><\/p>\n Updated at\u00a023.07 EST<\/p>\n Yet another fiery speech tonight here from Billie Eilish.
