Nottingham Forest’s<\/a> search for a new midfielder has taken a hit in recent hours, according to reports – with a move taking Inter Milan midfielder Davide Frattesi to the City Ground falling through.<\/p>\n

Forest have had a below-par season in the Premier League<\/a>, sitting just six points clear of relegation heading into the final third of the campaign, and with Europa League<\/a> football to contend with.<\/p>\n

Given their busy schedule, the Tricky Trees have been after recruits in the transfer window to give Sean Dyche<\/a> a helping hand in securing survival and potentially a European trophy, adding to their collection from the halcyon days under Brian Clough.<\/p>\n

Romano: Davide Frattesi to Nottingham Forest ‘Now Off’<\/p>\n

However, a report by Fabrizio Romano on X (formerly Twitter) states that Frattesi will now not leave Inter Milan, meaning that any deal taking him to Forest is now off.<\/p>\n

That is due to Liverpool refusing to let go of Curtis Jones, with Inter being interested in the Scouse native, and so the transfer carousel has stopped short of allowing the Italian midfielder to move to the East Midlands.<\/p>\n

Forest have a midfield vacancy to fill with Douglas Luiz’s loan spell being cut short, which saw him head to former club Aston Villa on loan earlier this week in a romantic return to play under Unai Emery, but it has left the Midlands club scrambling for replacements.<\/p>\n

The club signed veteran goalkeeper Stefan Ortega after Brazilian stopper John Victor was injured earlier in the campaign, but their first-team needs some new additions in the centre of the park and that could become harder to orchestrate with just under 24 hours left in the window.<\/p>\n

Forest Have Other Options After Frattesi Snub<\/p>\n

Forest had earlier made a bid for Celtic midfielder Arne Engels<\/a>, according to reports, though it’s not known whether that is a deal that is realistically set to go through by 7pm on Monday.<\/p>\n

The bid was reportedly worth in the region of \u00a314million, but Celtic won’t be keen on relinquishing control of their Belgian star given they have Europa League football and a title race to contend with themselves.<\/p>\n

It could see James McAtee get more game time, with his move to Forest from Manchester City over the summer failing to produce much joy.<\/p>\n

The diminutive midfielder has only started one game this season for Forest in the league, and he’s only appeared three times since the end of September, made worse by Forest’s exits from the cups.<\/p>\n
