Farming Photographs will see a field divided into \u2018pixels\u2019 of different wheats to grow a photographic-style artwork<\/p>\n
A Spanish artist is turning an entire French wheat field into a photographic image. Almudena Romero has begun work on Farming Photographs, a year-long collaboration with INRAE, France\u2019s national institute for agriculture, food and the environment. By spring this year, a two-hectare field will reveal a giant eye grown directly from the land.<\/p>\n
Instead of chemicals or cameras, Romero is using photosynthesis itself. Each wheat plant acts as a pixel, with subtle pigment variations creating an image that slowly appears as the crop matures.<\/p>\n
\u201cI wanted to see what photography could become if it worked with living systems rather than industrial processes,\u201d she said. \u201cThe landscape becomes both the medium and the message.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cComing from a family of sustainable orange farmers in Valencia, I have always been aware of the importance of how we do things as much as what we do, particularly in the context of the current environmental crisis,\u201d Romero told Positive News. \u201cWith Farming Photographs, I feel I have come full circle, making my photographic practice more sustainable by allowing images to emerge through light and plant growth.\u201d<\/p>\n
The project reimagines the 19th-century anthotype technique at environmental scale. The work will be visible from above and will shift with light, weather and the rhythm of the seasons.<\/p>\n
It will also end where it began, in the community. Once the image has fully emerged, the wheat will be harvested, milled and distributed locally as flour. INRAE researcher Claire Manceau called it \u201ca meeting of art and ecology that shows how creativity can reconnect us with the land\u201d.<\/p>\n
